    Gladys May Mahaffey of Alexandria, Nebr., was born to Isaac and Emma Powell, on Dec. 25, 1907 at rural Powell. She died Dec. 26, 1996, at the age of 89 years and 1 day.

    She attended country school and Powell school and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1926. She taught school near Daykin.

    She was united in marriage to Ernest Arthur Mafaffey of rural Hebron, June 3, 1928. Six children, two sons and four daughters were born to this union. Her hobbies were quilting, and other crafts.

    She was baptized into the Methodist Church in Bruning, on Jan. of 1961, and transferred to the Presbyterian church in Alexandria on Jan. 18, 1970. In 1967, she moved into Alexandria where she lived until she became a resident at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron, Nov. 1995. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and brothers.

    Survivors include her son, Larry Mahaffey, daughters, Lois Ream and her husband Daryl and Luree Marschman and her husband Ernest of Alexandria, Linda--_and her husband Dale of Dewitt, and Lula Korber and her husband David of Bern, Kansas, 13 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren, brothers, Harold Powell, and his wife Mildred, and Delmer Powell and his wife Vera of Fairbury, and other relatives. Services were Dec. 30 from the Alexandria Presbyterian church with Sylvia Cross officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Burial was in the Fairbury cemetery.

    Gladys married Ernest Arthur Mahaffey on 3 Jun 1928 in Nebraska. Ernest was born on 9 Jan 1903 in Hebron, Thayer County, Nebraska; died on 10 Jul 1963 in Thayer County, Nebraska; was buried on 12 Jul 1963 in Fairbury Cemetery, Fairbury, Jefferson County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Emma came from western Kansas to Powell, Nebraska to visit her sister, Christina SPRINGER. This is where she met her husband Isaac POWELL. (Milligan, p 296).

    Notes:

    John W. HAVEL was the son of Catherine PETRICKA and Jacob HAVEL. He immigrated to Minnesota in 1867. An August 28, 1903 issue of the Milligan Times it was written that "He was a member of the Posse that chased the Jesse James gang out of Minnesota after they had looted a bank." His obituary noted that "He was a carpenter by trade and many buildings hereabouts will long attest to his labors; but at the time of his death he was farming on his place in Liberty Township." (Milligan, p 295).

    Married:
    They were married int he Catholic Church with Josef PETRICKA and Josef HAVEL as witnesses. They renewed their vows in Fillmore County, Nebraska on March 20, 1880, moving shortly thereafter to Kansas and took a homestead north of Ludell. They apparently separated, as John remarried Fannie Krejdle in 1886, and Rosalie moved, without John, first south of Ludell, Kansas, and eventually on to Atwood Kansas. (Milligan, p 295).
