Savery F. Fenske

Notes:

The 1900 Federal Census for St. Joseph County, Michigan reflects that Maria Fenske was the mother of six children, two of whom were living in 1900. As Savery Fenske was the only other Fenske in St. Joseph that was born in Germany, it appears that he most likely was one of the two surviving children of Maria, the other being her son John Fenske, with whom she lived. At the time of the 1930 census, he was living in District 4, Kent County, Delaware.

Gottlieb married Maria "Mary" Jesse. Maria (daughter of Andrew Jesse and Mary Bajrovik) was born on 1 Mar 1835 in Strelitz, Kreis Kolmar, Posen, Prussia; died on 23 Mar 1914 in Sherman Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Fern has a note from her grandmother Augusta saying that Maria married a Venske or Fenske, and for a time lived in Sturgis, Michigan. Her grandmother remembers that a Skyler Su(a)venski/Fenski came to see her in Sturgis in the late 50's. Maria lived with her son John at the time of the St. Joseph County, Michigan census of 1900 and 1910.

Barbara LaChance [lachance@ccis.com] notes that "in a lot of the slavic names many of the letters are either not pronounced or are pronounced like an entirely different letter. I tried looking up your name "BAJROVIK" and the closest I could get in my books was: BAJOREK (Pol.) Dweller by the slough or muddy place. (Source: New Dictionary of American Family Names by E.C. Smith).

Married:
The names of the children Mary and Andrew JESSE, are based on list prepared by their granddaughter, Augusta Jesse Buchholz. Augusta's granddaughter, Fern Falkenstein Bengelsdorf, has the original list, and gave a copy of it to Dorothy Ball Williams. It APPEARS that George and Anna were the oldest children, and Amelia the youngest. This seems logical since George and Anna appear to have been the first to emigrate. The birthdates of the other children are ESTIMATED based on this assumption. If they were not listed in birth order, this is likely incorrect.
