Generation: 3

6. | David Sanford was born on 9 Jan 1768 in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut (son of Oliver Sanford and Phebe Newton); died on 2 Apr 1842 in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. Notes: The "History of Rutland County, Vermont" says that sometime before April 1783 Capt. Eleazer Dudley and Abijah Peet, both from Woodbury, Connecticut settled in the Town of Westhaven. Timothy Lindsley and others came the same year from Connecticut, and were closely followed by Heman Barlow, Cornelius Brownson, David Sanford, Samuel Lee, Amos and John McKinstry and others. David married Abigail Sturtevant before Sep 1789. Abigail was born about 1769; died on 19 Feb 1813. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
7. | Abigail Sturtevant was born about 1769; died on 19 Feb 1813.

12. | Oliver Sanford was born on 24 May 1744 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut (son of David Sanford and Rachel Strong); died on 18 Dec 1817 in Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont. Notes: In 1777, Oliver served in the Connecticut Militia in the Revolutionary war. He was captured by the British at the time of the Danbury raid, April 1777, and carried to New York. (Connecticut Men in Revolution, p. 493) Oliver married Phebe Newton. Phebe was born about 1748 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
13. | Phebe Newton was born about 1748 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut; and died. Notes: The Sanford genealogy incorrectly calls Phebe Newton the daughter of Joseph Newton; she was the daughter of Jonah Newtown and Phebe Platt. The error is based upon a misinterpretation of a deed: "All the children united in a deed conveying their rights in the estate and lands of Joseph Newton, late of Milford, Feb. 10, 1808, to Jonah Newton (Milford Land Record 24:363 & 561)." Joseph Newton, who died at Milford 11 November 1807, was Phebe's brother, not her father, and the Jonah Newton to whom the land was transferred was probably her other brother.
