Robert Wayne Smith

Rear Admiral Robert Wayne Smith, USN (R), 61, died Sunday, Jan. 21, at Pflugerville Care Center following a seven-year battle with Frontotemporal dementia.

Admiral Smith was born in Marshall and graduated from Teneha High School in 1963. He received his undergraduate degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and his Master's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D. C. He served 31 years in the United States Navy, followed by one year with Raytheon, Greenville. During his Navy career, Admiral Smith served on the USS Forrestal, USS John F. Kennedy, USS Eisenhower, and served as the commanding officer of the Naval Depot in Alameda, California, and as NAVAIR 6.0 Director.

When Admiral Smith was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia he worked as a volunteer with the Midlothian Food Bank in Midlothian and participated in the Stark Group, Center for Brain Health, at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas.

In 2006, Admiral Smith's son and daughter-in-law established the Admiral's Ride sponsoring a bike ride from Austin to the Center for Brain Health in Dallas, and raised over $16,000 and awareness for dementia and demetia caregivers.

Survivors: his wife of 38 years, Molly Spears Smith of Alexandria, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Colby and Keleigh Smith of Cedar Park; granddaughers, Avery Smith and Aubrie Smith; a grandson, Austin Smith; mother Letitia Edgar of Hemphill; sister, Letitia Ann Brittain of Dallas; Uncle and Aunt, James and Toni Wells of Pasadena; mother-in-law, Ellen Spears of Center; brother-in-law, James Spears of Tyler; and sisters-in-law, Trudy and Dr. Don Hay of Nacogdoches and Chris and Dave Dewey of Sandy, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his father, J. W. Smith.

Funeral mass was conducted Jan. 25 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Center with Father Jones Jayaraj officiating. Full military graveside rites will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, and Father DeRosa officiating.

Services are under the direction of Mangum Funeral Home in Center.

Letitia Emadine Edgar

Letitia Emadine Edgar Skinnell Edgar, 86, died Monday, Feb. 8. 2010, in the Baylor Hospital in Dallas. She was born on Sept. 18, 1923 in Marshall. Mrs. Edgar lived most of her life in Sabine County.

She is survived by sons, Jack Edgar and wife, Juanita of El Paso, and George Edgar and wife Sharon of Hemphill; daughters, Letitia Ann Britain of Rockwall, and Ruth Walker and husband Bob of El Paso; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands J. W. Smith and J. D. "Dempsey" Edgar; son Rear Admiral Robert Wayne Smith, grandson, Darren Edgar, and granddaughter, Kim Sanders.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 12, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Oakhill Cemetery, Hemphill.
