Reba Jean Cooper, 81, of Pineland, Texas passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 at Harbor Hospice in Jasper, Texas.

She was born July 9, 1942 in Milam, Texas to Edward James and Lula McGown James. She was a graduate of Hemphill High School and had worked as a secretary for the Sabine County Sheriff's Office for many years. A longtime resident of Sabine County, she had moved to Fort Worth with her husband when she was only 17 years old. They returned to Pineland in 1979 where she became a member of First Baptist Church.

Reba was the best wife and mother on the planet. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed taking care of them. Everyone loved her and in return, she loved them.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years and 7 months, Arlon Cooper of Pineland; daughter, Tammy Gilchrest and husband, Garnett, of Gordan, Texas; son, Tony Cooper and wife, Lisa, of Azle, Texas; sisters, Ruby Lois Dickerson of Yellowpine and Florine James Pitre of Hemphill; grandchildren, Craig Cooper, John-Marc Cooper, Julia Cooper, Dakota Joy and Garnett Caden Gilchrest; and great grandchild, Joye Cooper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Lula James; and siblings, Willard James, Mildred James Lamb, Jesse Ben James, Odis Print James, and Marvin Wayne James.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2024 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kenny Cates officiating.

Burial will follow services in Cooper-Harris Cemetery.

He married a Rosallie UNKNOWN prior to the 1920 census.

At the time of the 1930 Sabine County census, he was a boarder in the home of Clifford and Annie Reynolds in JP No 8. He was shown as age 32 and divorced, and his occupation was listed as laborer, section hand.

Sam Wilson of Richardson, Texas emailed that Jim Cooper married second Doris Riola Lewis. He understood James Cooper had two sons by his earlier marriage but he only briefly met one of them and didn't remember their names

Local Resident has 100 birth anniversry celebration

Doris Lewis Cooper will celebrate the her 100 birthday on July 30, at the Christian Life Center of the First Baptist Church in Pineland.

She was born on July 30, 1911 in Bleakwood. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Samuel Lewis, who served in the first Texas Congress as representative for what is now Jasper. She lived in Newton County until she was 15 years old. At that time she moved with her family to a farm near Milam. She amrried James (Jim) Cooper in 1932. They had five children: Winona WILSON of Richardson, Jimmie ADDISON of Crowley, Ruth CATES of Fort Worth, Arlon COOPER of Pineland and Doris FISK of Forth Worth.

The family moved to Hemphill in 1951. After all the children graduated from Hemphill High School, the family moved to Fort Worth, she she lives now alone in her own home. Three daughters live near by. She cooks her meals, takes care of herself, and the house. She uses a walker, because of arthritis; otherwise she is in fairly good health.

She has been an active church member most of her life. She loves to play "42" a domino game, and she reads Christian novels.

She did not have a career. She was a housewife, who spent her summers canning the produce the farm provided. She was a wonderful mother to her children. She is grandmother to 11, great grandmother to 22, and great-great grandmother to four. She is favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews.

If you knew her when she lived in Sabine County, or if you knew her children, you are welcome to attend her birthday party from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 30.
