Frances Edwina Hall , 87, of Baytown, Texas passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at St. James Nursing Home in Baytown, Texas.

Frances was born on August 15, 1932 in Hemphill, Texas to Edward L Conn and Willie Esther Dorsey. She was a loving mother, wife and homemaker.

She is survived by her son; John E. Hall and wife, Joy of Baytown, Texas, daughter; Charlotte Pool and husband, Ronald of Livingston, Texas, brother; Pat Gilchriest and wife, Ruthann of Nederland, Texas, grandchildren; Adam John Hall and wife, Jennifer of Mount Belleveiu, Texas, Crystila Carol Householder of Baytown, Texas, Ronald Pool III and wife, Angel of Livingston, Texas, Olen Joseph Pool of Livingston, Texas, great grandchildren; Alexa Hall, Kaitlin Hall, Case Householder, Travis Vaughan, Jaxon Householder, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Olen Hall, brother; Mike Gilchriest, great grandchild, Bryce Logan Householder and her parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2020 with Funeral Services to follow at 11:30 a.m. in Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas with Bro. Randy Mills officiating.

Burial will follow service in Gravel Hill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Adam Hall, Olen Pool, Ronald Pool III, Patrick Gilchriest, Woody Dorsey, and Ronald Pool II serving as pallbearers.

Esther Gilchriest

Esther Dorsey Gilchriest, 82, of Beaumont died Friday, Feb. 10, 1995, at Beaumont Regional Medical Center in Beaumont.

Born Dec 16, 1912, in Milam as a daughter of the late Edward and Willie (Russell) Dorsey, she had lived in Beaumont the past 13 years and was a member of the Baptist Church and the Rebekar Jasmine #17 and Python Systers.

Survivors: daughter, Edwina Conn Hall of Milam; two sons, Mike Gilchriest of Milam and Pat Gilchriest of Beaumont; sisters, Virgie Dorsey Parrish of Geneva and Wilna Dorsey Horn of Beaumont; brother E. W. Dorsey of Milam; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Rev. Ralph Martin and Rev. Horace Dickerson officiating. Interment followed at Gravelhill Cemetery in Sabine County.

Pallbearers: Mike Gilchriest, Dwayne Buckley, James Roy Boyett, John E. Hall, Travis Dorsey, and David Parrish. Honorary pallbearers; James E. Dorsey, Gerald Buckley, Kenneth Horn, Woody Dorsey, Benji Dorsey, and Ronald Lee Pool III.

FindAGrave instead lists her date of death as 30 Jan 1902, but there is not a photo of the tombstone to verify this earlier date.

Abstract of Civil War Pension Applications, Sabine County, Texas: Mrs. Nancy Jane Ferguson, widow's application for pension number 26250, field March 14, 1912, approved December 1, 1913, allowed from March 1, 1914. Date of pension November 9, 1912. She is the widow of Jeremiah Alexander Ferguson who departed this life on February 12, 1912 in Sterling County, Texas. They were married on October 14, 1866 in Sabine County, Texas. She has not remarried. Her age is 66 years and she was born in Sabine County, Texas. She has lived in Sabine County, Texas for 62 years and her post office address is Hemphill, Texas. Mr. (sic) Nancy Jane Ferguson died June 6, 1928 in Sabine County, Texas.

At the time of the 1910 Census, she was living with the family of her widowed daughter, Melissa Ferguson Conn, in Precinct 1 of Sabine County.

Although the transcription of the New Hope Cemetery shows her as Tibatha Dorsey, it appears that after Frank Dorsey died in 1886, she remarried Stephen JONES, probably around 1889, as the 1900 census shows they had been married 11 years. Three of her children by Frank Dorsey are listed as JONES in 1900. Since all were born prior to 1889, and since other records show Dosie and William J. had the last name of Dorsey, it is assumed this is in error. In 1910, the widowed Tibatha Jones is living between son Will Dorsey (shown as Will Jones in 1900) and daughter Rosa Dorsey Chambers.

The 1910 census shows her as the mother of nine children in total, 7 born to Frank Dorsey and 2 born in Stephen Jones. Two of these children had predeceased her.

Virgie Speights wrote that she owned a loom on which cloth was woven for skirts, trousers and dresses, and beautiful blankets and coverlets.
