His Texas Death certificated shows that he was the son of Bert Nash and Gladys Gregg, both born in Texas. He had been a 30 year resident of Galveston at the time of his death, and was a retired professor of pharmacology. There is a military marker at his gravesite, which shows a cross and is inscribed Joe Bert Nash, 1st Lt US Marine Corps, World War II, Aug. 31, 1921, Jul. 25, 1979.

He went by the nickname "Bud", and his family called him "Big Papa." His tombstone reads Clement M. Easley. At the time of the 1920 Federal census, twin sons Cyril and Cecil were still living at home, along with his 14 year old granddaughter, Mary G. Rains.
