    Gene P. Smith, 68 of Lincoln, passed away November 23, 2022. Gene was born on August 17, 1954 in Crete, Nebraska to Billie and Virgie (Havel) Smith. He grew up in Lincoln where he graduated from East High in 1972. He was active in sports during high school, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Gene worked in the tire industry for 50 years, retiring in April of this year.

    He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, playing softball and horses. He was a coach to his kids in both sports and life. In recent years, Gene loved watching his grandchildren as they started competing in their sporting events.

    Gene is survived by his wife Jane and their children Kyle (wife Sara) Smith of Beverly Hills, MI, Scott (wife Katie) Smith of Lincoln and Stacy (husband Tyler) Stahly of Hickman; five grandchildren: Addison Smith, Jackson Smith, Wyatt Smith, Benny Smith and Savannah Stahly; his mother Virgie of Lincoln and sister Barb (husband Mike) Honnerman (sic-actually is Honerman) of North Platte as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

    He is preceded in death by his father Billie Smith and sister Sue Lockee.

    There will be a Memorial Service at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 29 at Sesostris Shrine Center, 1050 Saltillo Road. A Celebration of Life to follow from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Sesostris Shrine Center.

    Notes:

    Bill D. Smith age 84 of Lincoln Nebraska passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at The Monarch in Lincoln. He was born on March 17, 1929 in Chester, Nebraska to Cleo V. and Lois E. (Gifford) Smith. He graduated from Crete High School in 1947. Bill served with the U S Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952 with the 200th Engineer Company 196 Inf. Regt. He was stationed in Colorado and then for a year in Alaska. Bill married Virgie Havel on January 23, 1954 and they celebrated 59 years together. They moved to Lincoln in 1957. Bill was a dedicated Benefit supervisor with Woodmen Accident and Life Insurance Company for 37 years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching all sports, especially the Huskers, Saltdogs and KC Royals.

    Bill is survived by his wife Virgie of Lincoln; son, Gene and Jane Smith of Lincoln; daughter, Barbara and Michael Honerman of North Platte; son-in-law, Dr. Brad and Laura Lockee of Pierce; grandchildren, Ryan, Reed, Kyle, Scott, Stacy, Matt, Brian, Amy, Brent, Aaron, Jake and Katie; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Ethan, Addison, Savannah and Wyatt. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Susan Lockee.
    Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wyuka Funeral Home.

    Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., with a rosary preceding the Mass at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 7601 Vine Street. Fr. Lyle M. Johnson will be officiating.

    Burial with Military Honors will be in Wyuka Cemetery.
    Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

Havel and Frances "Fannie" Krejdle); died on 12 Dec 1977 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska.

    Notes:

    Emil was a trucker for several years, owned and operated a restaurant, and did carpenter work for many people. He and his brother Bill built various dwellings around the community. He was one of the first volunteer firemen and served the town of Milligan for 68 years. He was a charter member of the Knight of Pythias and a member of the ZCBJ Lodge. His nickname was "Skelly." (Milligan, p 292).

    Emil married Tonie Laun on 5 Oct 1914 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Tonie (daughter of Frank Laun and Mary Yeck) was born on 23 Oct 1898 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 19 Oct 1990 in Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska.     Notes:

    Tonie was born in Milligan in a hotel which stood on the corner of downtown. She lived in different houses while growing up, one being a valley house where her sister Alice was born. She was Catholic and sang in the choir. She attended school through the tenth grade. (Milligan, p 291).

    Notes:

    John W. HAVEL was the son of Catherine PETRICKA and Jacob HAVEL. He immigrated to Minnesota in 1867. An August 28, 1903 issue of the Milligan Times it was written that "He was a member of the Posse that chased the Jesse James gang out of Minnesota after they had looted a bank." His obituary noted that "He was a carpenter by trade and many buildings hereabouts will long attest to his labors; but at the time of his death he was farming on his place in Liberty Township." (Milligan, p 295).

    The 1910 Fillmore County, Nebraska census indicates she was the mother of 15 children, 10 of them still living.
