    Veda Tocci

    Veda Belle Tocci, 88, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Indiana, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, in San Antonio.

    A daughter of Christopher and Sally McSweaney Hoover, she was born Sept. 29, 1908, in Plumville.

    Mrs. Tocci was a former member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church in Indiana.

    She was a housewife and employed as a cafeteria worker in the San Antonio school system. She moved from Indiana to San Antonio in 1970.

    Surviving are one son, Ronald, and his wife, Julie, Mandeville, LA.; two grandchildren, Ronald and Luchia Tocci; three sisters Ruth Tocci, Delmont; Etta Yarkowski, Pittsburgh, and Kathleen Clever, Akin, S.C. and one brother, Richard Tocci, Cedar Edge, Colo.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James V. Tocci, Sr; and an infant son, James V. Jr.

    A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Cemetery in Indiana, with her niece, Deacon Jean Steel, officiating.

    Notes:

    On the 1910 Census, Christopher and Mary were living in Atwood, PA, and his occupation was Teamster, Gas Company. They had been married 4 years, and were shown as the parents of two children, both still living, daughters Edna and Veda.

    The 1912 birth certificate of daughter Olive Ruth Hoover shows his occupation as Liveryman. He was 27 when she was born, and the family was living in Plumville, Indiana County, PA.

    On the 1920 census, the family was still in Indiana Co, PA, and his occupation was that of a farmer.

    In 1930, he was still living in Indiana County, PA. His wife Sally had died four years previously, and he was the sole occupant of his household, working as a laborer at odd jobs. None of his seven children were listed in the home, the younger ones likely living with relatives?

    In 1940 he had remarried, and he and his second wife Anna were living in Indiana County, with her two sons, George and Donald Borland, as well as a 3 year old daugther Susanne and 9 month old son, Clarence.

    In 1950, and Anna May were still in Indiana County. His occupation was cattle dealer. He and Mary had two more children, Rose Gene (7) and James (2). Stepson Donald was still living in the home, working as a salesman at a retail gas station. Their was also a lodger, Thomas Rupert, age 64, sharing their home.

    Christopher C Hoover, of Indiana, died Friday, June 2, 1972 at his home in Indiana RD 4. He was born 3 Dec 1883 at Atwood, the son of Zenas H. and Elizabeth Rowley Hoover. He was married April 3, 1937 to Mrs. Anna May McLain.

    He had been a member of the US Trotting Association, and was a retired livestock dealer.

    Survived by daughters and sons, Mrs. Edna Martin, Duncansville, Mrs. Veda Tocci, San Antonio, Mrs. Ruth Tocci and Zenas H Hoover, both of Indiana, Mrs. Edward (Etta Mae) Yarkowsie, Pittsburgh, Richard C Hoover and Mrs. Ahrens (Kathleen) Clever, both of Boulder, Colo, Mrs. James (Suzanne) Barto, Cherry Tree, Clarence Ed Hoover, Indiana, Mrs. Robert (Rose) Lundburg, Akron, OH, James Hoover, Blairsvillr, also 27 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

    Preceded in death by first wife, Mrs. Sally McSweeney Hoover, who died Dec. 8, 1926..

    Mrs. Sally Edna Hoover, McSweeney, wife of C. C. Hoover of Indiana [PA], died Tuesday morning at two-fifteen o'clock, age 37 years. She leaves these children: Edna, Veda, Ruth, Jean, Etta Mae, Richard and Cathleen.

    Her Indiana Marriage License listed her parents as Dennis and Frances L McSwiney.

    Her Indiana Death Certificate shows her parents as Denis McSwany and Frances Beck. Information was CC Hoover, of Indiana, PA.

    Married:
    Their 1906 Pennsylvania application for a marriage license lists the couple of Christopher Hoover and Sally E McSwiney, ages 22 and 18. He was a resident of Atwood, and she of Willet. Christopher was shown as a son of Zena H and Elizabeth Hoover, and Sally as a daughter of Dennis and Frances L. McSwiney.

    Due to her age, Sally's mother, Frances gave her written consent. Christopher was listed as a Liveryman, and Sally as "at home."

    Witnesses were William E Doran (the Justice of the Peace, who filed the license) and Susan A Trumble. They were married by the Rev. P.J. Howe, a Catholic Priest.

    When their daughter Olive Ruth was born in 1912, she was shown as their fourth child, all still living. Apparently the third child, name and sex unknown, was born after the 1910 census, but died before the 1920 census.

    Census records show a son born in 1916, but not other children listed with the family, though there are several other children listed in both her and her husband's obituaries?

    Death Calls Four Residents of the County

    Z. H. Hoover, aged 58 years, died at this home on West Philadephia street, Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock. Death was caused by paralysis. Mr. Hoover was a well-known horse and cattle dealer in Armstrong county and also followed that occupation in Indiana county. He leaves his widow and these children: Mrs. J. M. Myers of Ambridge; J. R. Hoover of Apollo and Misses Etta and Elizabeth Hoover at home.Mr. Hoover was a conscientious member of the First United Presbyterian Church, the pastor of which, The Rev. Chalmers G Morrow will condut the funeral services at the Hoover home tomorrow evening. Interment will be made at Atwood Saturday morning.

    Zenas married Elizabeth Ellen Roxan Rowley about 1881.     She was the head of household at the time the 1920 census was taken, as her husband had died in February 1919. She was living with two of her daughters, Etta and Elizabeth, plus three grandchildren, born to her daughter Mary Ina, who had died five years previously.

    FindAGrave shows her as a daughter of John Rowley (1827-1905) and Mary Ann Bolvin (1825-1889), both buried in East Mahoning Cemetery, Purchase Line, Indiana County, PA.

    Her Pennsylvania Death Certificate shows the same parents, and notes she was a widow. Her address at the time of her death was 510 N Seventh St, Apollo, PA. Informant was her son. John R. Hoover, of the same address.Parents are also listed as John Rowley and Mary Ann Bolvin.

    Mrs. Levinia McSwiney

    Mrs. Levinia McSwiney, widow of the late Dennis McSwiney, of Washington Township, died at her late home Saturday evening, July 23, of complications of diseases. She was aged about 58 years. She is survived by the following children: Bryan, Martha, Harry, Vernie, Grace, Mabel and Arthur, at home, and Mrs. Sally Hoover, of Atwood. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D.W Lacrone and interment was made in the Atwood cemetery. Mrs. McSwiney was notified last week of the fact that she was to receive about $2,000 back pension. The papers arrived from Pittsburgh the day before her death.

    History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865; Research provided by HDS subscriber shows that John Rowly, husband of Mary Bolvin, enlisted into the Union Army as a Private on 26 August 1864, into Company A of the 206th Infantry in Pennsylvania. He Mustered out on 26 June 1866 in Richmond, VA. His date of death was shown on this 8 Dec 1905 in Hillsdale, PA. The same information is inscribed on his headstone, which can be seen on Find a Grave.


    At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, John and Mary Rowley were listed with six children in Grant Twp, Indiana Couny, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, with his real property listed as being worth $13,000, and personal property worth $1,000, similar to his neighbors. Eldests sons Anthony and Cornelius were both working on the farmer, with only Anthony still attending school. Eldest daughter Martha was no longer at school, with occupation listed "at home." John, Elizabeth and Nancy had all attended school during the year.

    The will of John Rowley, of Grant township, has been filed. His sons, Cornelius, Anthony and O.B. Rowley, and two daguthers Elizabeth E. R. Hoover and Nancy A Weaver, are to share equally in the dividion of the estate. The will directs that his son, John Hagerman, gets $50 less and daughter, Mary O., $25 less than the four names above. His daughter, Mrs. Jane Titterington, is given a judgement of $158.64 and $200. Roy Kinann and his grandson, John Weaver, are each given $100. Cornelius is given the first opportunity of purchasing the property. Josiah Rowley and J. A. Muman are appointed executors. The will is dated June 16, 1897,
