Lela Bell Eddins

Lela Bell Eddins, 92, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Twin Lakes Rehabilitation and Care Center in San Augustine.

Mrs. Eddins was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Gregg County as a daughter of the late Charlie and Lucy Clegg Smith and had been a longtime resident of the Sabine and San Augustine Counties area. She was a homemaker and a member fo the Order of the Eastern Star and the Baptist Church.

Survivors: sons, Edward McGown and wife Betty of Hemphill and Ellis McGown and wife Linda of San Augustine; daughters, Mary Golden of Lufkin and Katy Newton and husband Wayne of San Augustine; brother, Jim Clegg of Bronson; grandchildren, Shane, Todd, Jimmy, Janiece, Tammy, Chad, Amber, Crystal, Michelle, Georgette, Nikki, and Travis; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Eddins; sons, John McGown and George McGown; and a grandson, John Hanks.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Gordon Simmons officiating. Interment followed at Centerview Cemetery near Pineland.

Pallbearers: Eugene Clegg, Shane McGown, Todd McGown, Jimmy Woods, Weldon Thomas and Tommy Newton.

Services were under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

Lela married Newton Hannibal "Dick" McGown before 1932. Newton (son of James Jefferson "Jeff" McGown and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Stroud) was born on 10 May 1907 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 21 Sep 1995 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried on 23 Sep 1995 in Pine Hill Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. 1. Edward Henderson "Pap" McGown was born on 28 Dec 1937 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; died on 8 Feb 2021 in Longview, Gregg County, Texas; was buried in Meador Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas.
2. George W. McGown was born on 26 Oct 1942 in Texas; died on 17 Apr 2004 in Texas.
