Ancestry.com. U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2012 shows that his brother, Glen R. Powell of Blanding, Utah applied for a veteran's headstone for Oliver C. Powell Jr.

He enlisted in the military in June 1942, and again on 25 Jun 1952. He was discharged due to his death on 9 July 1954. His miliatry branch of service was listed as RA-18 082 145 Co L 39th Inf Reg APO 696 US Army.

Notes:

When he registered for the draft during World War I, he listed his occupation as Farmer in Bon Wier, Texas. His nearest relative was shown as J. W. Powell of Merryville, Louisiana, his father. He was described as of Medium Heighth, Slender, with blue eyes and dark hair. On his registration for the World War II draft, he was still farming in Newton County, His place of birth was shown as Lees Mill versus Bon Wier. When asked for a name and address of a person who would always know his address, his answer was W. A. Newton.

His Texas Death Certificate lists him as a retired farmer, and a Widower. He had not served in the U.S. Armed Forces. At the time of his death, he lived at 3141 Proctor Street, Port Arthur, Texas. Informant on the death certificate was Carroll Powell, his oldest half brother.

Carolyn Lockhart and Ruby Boyett Burkett showed her as Pearl Faskee Hamilton.

Birth certificate of her son, Glen Ray Powell, shows she was born in Rockland, Texas and shows her last name as FOSHEE. This same birthplace is shown on the birth certificates of sons James Frederic and John Richard, though her last name on that was spelled Forshee on one and Foshaee on the other. John Richard's birth certificate indicated that she was the mother of nine living children, having given birth to eleven children in total.

Additionally, on FindAGrave, she is listed as Pearl Mae Foshee Powell, a daughter of James Henry Foshee and Kathryn Foshee (nee Miller). She is also linked to four siblings on that website, Ruby Gisbon Buxton, Carmon Ersell Foshee Johnson, J H Foshee, and Louis Robert Foshee.

Her Texas Death Certificate shows her as Mrs. Pearl Mae Powell, a resident of 3150 Cable, Beaumont, Texas. She was married, and shown as born in Rockland, Texas to James Henry FASHEE born in Tyler County, and Kathryn Miller, as born in Tyler. Infomant was Mrs. Sam Hartman, also residing at 3150 Beaumont. She dies of acute glomerular nephritis, and myocarditis, chronic at the age of 44 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Notes:

In a Morgan Descendancy chart posted on the internet, the nickname "Jefferson" was shown for John Walter Powell. Carolyn Powell Lockhart indicates that her great grandfather was John Walter Powell, and that to her knowledge he was never called by that nickname. Carolyn indicated that he remarried after his wife's death and he and his second wife moved to Merryville. Ruby Burkett notes that If Martha Ann died on March 23, 1913, there is some confusing information here. Her family story was that when "Aunt Minnie Maysel Boyett was married to Andy Arrington Fuller on May 13, 1913, they moved into a two room apartment in the home of her Aunt and uncle Martha Ann and Walter Powell in Merryville. Martha Ann was known as Aunt Babe. Their home was just behind, what I supose, is the present City Hall in Merryville. Of course much has changed in Merryville. I can assume that Martha Ann was dear to my grand-mother, Henrietta Jones Boyett, because she named one of her daughters Martha Ann and she was also called Babe"

His Texas Death Certificate shows that although he was a resident of Merryville, LA at the time of his death, he died in Voth, Texas. His father was shown as John Powell, born in Arkansas, and his mother, Lucy Thomas, born in Texas.

John married Martha Ann "Babe" Jones on 1 Dec 1875 in Jasper County, Texas. Martha (daughter of Sion Jones and Elizabeth Morgan) was born on 18 Aug 1856 in Georgia; died on 23 Mar 1913 in Bon Wier, Newton County, Texas; was buried in Ford Cemetery, Bon Wier, Jasper County, Texas. In her letter dated September 4, 1999, Carolyn Lockhart writes "Malichi Morgan served in the same Texas Cavalry as my John A. Powell did. John Powell is buried in a confederate cemetery at Camp Butler, Illinois with a rebel marker which is pointed at the top, so the Yankee's couldn't sit on it. He left a wife Lucy Thomas (who later married John Lee) and two small children, John Walter Powell & Emma Luvenia." A photo of his tombstone is shown on FindAGrave. It further indicates he served in Co. G, 24 Texas Cavalry.

A FindAGrave listing for his daughter, Emma Luvenia Powell, states, apparently in error, that her father John A. Powell died on 10 Mar 1868 in Jasper County.

Her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Paula Williamson, states that "She was the a widow who was the first wife of John Henry Lee. She died of measles after being exposed to her grand daughter with measles who also died. She and John had 4 children (she had children by previous marriage.) "

Per the article entitled LOCKHART ADDS TO HAWTHORN HISTORY "Sion Jones (was the) son of Matthew Jones and grandson of Robert....He served in Campbell's County CSA which patrolled the coast of Florida and also served in Atlanta. Sion died in August 1864, leaving Elizabeth with seven children. She was 36 years old. She moved to Texas in 1868....The Morgans and Jones's are both Welsh." In a subsequent letter to Melinda Strong, Carolyn Powell Lockhart adds that Sion Jones had died in the Battle of Atlanta. Bonnie Jones notes that he actually died of an illness contracted during the fighting of the Civil War.

Sion married Elizabeth Morgan on 3 Feb 1853 in Decatur County, Georgia. Elizabeth (daughter of Daniel Morgan and Mary ???) was born on 31 Dec 1830 in North Carolina; died on 13 Dec 1902 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Magnolia Springs Cemetery, Magnolia Springs, Jasper County, Texas. Said by some to have been born in Surry County, NC, but no proof cited. This seems unlikely as the family was listed in Sampson County as of the 1830 census.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that after the death of Sion Jones in Georgia "Elizabeth sold her land in Decatur County (ca 1868) and came to Texas. She and [her widowed sister] Dorcas Lee had about 9 children with them. Someone met them in Galveston and it was the first time she had ever seen an iron cook stove. She instructed her kids not to mention their Indian ancestry. She herself never mentioned it even though she always wore fringes on her dresses to remind her own self of her heritage. She was 61 when she died, never remarried and never filed a pension from Sion Jones CSA record."

In a letter from Carolyn Lockhart, she states that Elizabeth died in the home of her oldest son, Newton B. Jones. Like the Morgan's, the Jones family were also of Welsh ancestry. The Hawthorne family were neighbors in Georgia and also in Jasper County.

Ruby Boyett showed she died in 1897, but this can not be correct as (1) she had a daughter born in 1899 (2) she can be found on the 1900 census with her husband and children and (3) her tombstone is said to be inscribed 13 Dec 1902.

Elizabeth Morgan m Sion Jones on 3 Feb 1853
