William Watson McDaniel

Notes:

Robert Cecil McDaniel, a descendant, wrote in his autobiography that "My McDaniel ancestors migrated west from the Edgefield District near Spartanburg, South Carolina, and apparently stopped for a time in Mississippi. They were enumerated in the federal census of 1850, both in Itwambia County, Mississippi, and in Sabine County, Texas." He also indicated that they settled in the community later to be known as Fairdale, in the southeastern part of Sabine County.

1. Ellen Lavina McDaniel was born about 1841 in South Carolina; died about 1903 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas.
2. Levi P. "Lee" McDaniel was born in Aug 1842 in South Carolina; died about 1906; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas.
3. William W. McDaniel was born on 14 Sep 1844 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina; died on 10 Dec 1899 in Bayou Community, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas.

William married Sarah Miller after 1860. Sarah (daughter of John Miller and Rachel Ann Berry) was born on 27 Dec 1836 in Simpson County, Mississippi; died on 31 Jul 1906. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

White & Toole, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records", pages 46 and 47 show that "In 1786, Absalom McD. made his will naming wife Bartha and sons, WILLIAM, Hiram and Jehiel. Hiram also moved to Georgia about 1798. Absalom's estate was on the Savanah River. His father, James had rec'd 640 A. plus 756 A. in 1796. In 1813, Alexander McD., Wm. McD. acting as his attorney, sold over 1000 acres of land to Moses Swearingen. Much of the information about the family of William and Dosha McDaniel was taken from a letter rec'd by the late Lewis McD. of Sabine County from a cousin in Alabama, in 1924. The letter was from John Matheny. He obviously copied if from the family Bible, for most of these lines have been researched from then until present, and they have checked out to be correct."

The daughter of Edward Couch and Apsilia Watson. Edward d ca 1796 sons John, Watson, and Willis, a dtr Francis was the mother of Mamie Norris Tillman, wife of Gov. Ben Tillman of S.C. John Watson is believed to have been the father of Apselia Watson Couch. (White and Toole, p 46-47).
