Glenn Milo Bartu

He was the joy of his parents lives for the three years he graced their family. He died of Leukemia on March 25, 1964. (Milligan, 1988-2008, p. 106).

Notes:

Milo attended country school in District #96 and #59 until he had to quit to help on the family farm. As a young man, he and his brother Fred hand picked corn over several harvest seasons on Iowa. Milo was drafted into the Army in 1942, and was stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon. After his honorable discharge in 1943, he returned to farming. He also sold seed corn for NC+ seeds for 28 years. They first met at a dance at Sokol Hall in Wilber in 1942, and were married a few years later, after Milo served in the armed forces during World War II. They enjoyed dancing and polka music throughout their married live. (Milligan, 1988-2008, p. 106).

His WWI draft registration card listed him as a farmer from Tobias, Nebraska. His nearest relative was listed as Francis Bartu, also of Tobias.

Fred and Frances started married life on his father's farm in Section 10 of Atlanta Precinct in Saline County, where all his children were born. His children all graduated from the eighth grade in rural school district #59 of Saline County (Milligan, p 190).

Frank was 24 when he came to America. He homesteaded the S 1/2 NW 1/4 of Section 12 in Glengary Township of Fillmore County, claiming the land at the Beatrice Land Office on April 10, 1878. His brother, Peter, homesteaded the N 1/2 of this quarter on the same day. Frank received the patent to his 80 acres on July 10, 1883. He sold this 80 acres to his brother on June 28, 1890. Frank Bartu became a naturalized citizen of the United States on November 22, 1880 in Fillmore County. He later purchased school land from the state of Nebraska a the W 1/2 SE 1/4 and the E 1/2 SW 1/4. The land was sold to his son-in-law, Vaclav Urban, and almost immediately transferred back to Vaclav's mother-in-law, Katherine Bartu. When the Bartu's lived on this farm, they had Catholic Church services on Sundays there (Milligan, pp 189-190).

As of the 1910 census, the widowed Frank Bartu was living with his son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Fannie Bartu, in Saline County.
