Cecelia Payne of New Brunswick, Canada read the microfilm copy of the marriage certificate of Edwin Poole and Janet White. She reported that Edwin Poole was listed as a Resident of St. John, was born in St. John, was a mechanic, and was the son of William and Mary Poole.

According to information shown of the Twelfth Census of the United States, for Essex County, Massachusetts (E.D. No 380, 11 June 1900), Edwin and Janet Poole emigrated from Canada in 1892.

1910 Massachusetts not yet indexed. Need to try to find him in both Essex and Suffolk Co, Mass in 1910.

A lookup volunteer checked the 1912 and 1916 City Directories for Chelsea, but was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole listed.

I was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole in the 1920 Mass soundex. Could they already have moved from Mass and be in transit?

Jake Schopf writes that "Edwin was an adventurer. He homesteaded north of Edmondton, Alberta. He did some oil exploration. He signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and fought in World War I. He received a medal for bravery. He was never able to settle down long enough to enjoy the benefits of his investments. He played the concertina well."

Edwin married Janet Agnes White on 15 Dec 1888 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Janet (daughter of Leslie White, Sr. and Elizabeth McFadden) was born on 10 Jun 1860 in Portland, St. John County, New Brunswick, Canada; was christened on 14 Nov 1860 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; died on 28 Oct 1949 in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington. According to her death certificate, filed by her daughter, Grace Schopf, she had lived in Everett for 13 years prior to her death (since approximately 1936), and although born in New Brunswick, Canada, she was a citizen of the U.S. The marriage register for Janet and Edwin show that Janet was born in St. John and a resident of St. John. Witnesses to the marriage were David McFadden and William Poole of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada (Courtesy of Cecelia Payne) Dorothy Wiggs, a family researcher, wrote that Edwin and Janet separated, and that he moved to Edmondton, Alberta, Canada and lived in a home there until his death. Janet remained in the States and lived with her daughter Grace, whom the family always knew as big Grace.

On a family group sheet that Cecelia sent me (source unknown), it was noted that William was a Methodist and his occupation was that of a Lay Preacher.

William married Mary Elizabeth Duval on 10 Jul 1865 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Mary (daughter of George Duval and Charlotte Foster) was born on 11 Nov 1841 in London, Middlesex, England; died on 2 Nov 1925 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; was buried on 4 Nov 1925 in Fernhill Cemetery, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Many friends in the city will learn with regret of the death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Poole, aged 86, which took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ludwig Christianson, 92 Somerset Street about 9 o'clock in this morning.

The deceased, who had been in poor health for two years, took a turn for the worse about two weeks ago and was found dead in her bed this morning by her daughter.

Survived by four daughters, Mrs. Christianson; Mrs. Wilfred Suthers, Tolfield, Mass.; Mrs. Frank Wagner, Liverpool, N.S.; another daughter in Foxborough, Mass; four sons, Arthur, Greenfield, Mass.; Walter, Watertown, Mass.; Edwin, Edmonton, Alta; William, Texas.

Cecelia Payne of New Brunswick, Canada cites a "Genealogical CD with the first two generations of the NB families on it" as showing Leslie White as the son of George and Ann/Agnes White (d. December 20, 1878).

George White was said to have been born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. The death certificate of son, Leslie, instead shows Glasgow.

Leslie's siblings were shown as Margaret (married George Thomas Ward), Jane, Mary (married a Mr. Nicholson), Peter, George (d. January 17, 1915) and Agnes (b. November 18, 1846 d. March 18, 1928; wife of Andrew Campbell b. April 03, 1833 d. December 02, 1913).

Leslie married Elizabeth McFadden. Elizabeth was born about 1832 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

On Thursday George Duval died, age 87. He leaves 3 sons and 3 daughters. One son, E.H. Duval conducts business in Waterloo. John is with the Howe Woodworking Co. William resides in the States. The daughters are Mrs. M. E. Poole, 92 Somerset, Mrs. Craft of Lynn and Miss Emily. Funeral Saturday, October 8th. Rev. Dr. Gates Officiating.

George married Charlotte Foster on 26 Dec 1838 in St. Mary Magdeline Parish, Bermondsey, London, England. Charlotte was born after 1819 in Newbury, Berkshire, England; was christened on 16 May 1819 in Kingsclaire Parish, Hampshire, England; died on 16 May 1898 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; was buried on 18 May 1898 in Fernhill Cemetery, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. At the time of their marriage, they were both of legal age, living in Spitalfields, and both of their fathers were dead. Witnesses were William Eames and John Wheeler. Rector James E. Gibson.

Cecelia Payne's CD of early New Brunswick settlers showed two additional children, both born after 1870 (when Charlotte was over 50). They are not, however, on Alice Robert's "Duval.ged" at the Rootsweb WorldConnect Project. I have not listed them either. The additional two children shown were:
