Mary Armenta "Mollie" Stokes, 89 passed away March 17, 2003 at Garden Terrace in Houston. Mrs. Stokes was a resident of West Columbia, Texas from 1955 to 2000. Mollie was born on April 28, 1913 in Chinquapin, Texas. Her father, George A. LEWIS was born in 1868 and mother, Laura Henrietta LOGGINS was born in 1875. Mollie had eight brothers and two sisters. She was a fourth generation Texn and particularly proud of being a descendant of Pocahontas and Jim BOWIE. On May 12, 1937, she married the love of her life, Clyde Alston STOKES. The couple had one son, Robert C. STOKES. The couple lived in California and Nevada from 1937 to 1952 until they moved back home to Chinquapin. After the death of her husband, she moved to West Columbia, Texas to live near her sister, Lillian EALY, whom Mollie loved dearly. Mollie graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and taught the third grade in West Columbia Texas from 1955 through 1974. She was very proud of teaching and loved every one of her students. Mrs. STOKES was preceded in death by her husband in 1955. She is survived by her sister, Lillian EALY of Tomball, Texas; her son, Robert C. STOKES and daughter-in-law, Donna FAUST Stokes of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Jennifer Ann STOKES and her husband, Jerry McFadden YOUNG of Houston; grandson Robert C. STOKES, Jr. of San Francisco, California, and her great grandchildren, Victoria Anne YOUNG and Grace McFadden YOUNG of Houston, and her namesake niece, Molly Francis LOVETT of Tomball, Texas, and numerous other loving nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Chinquapin Cemetery.

The March 26, 2003 Sabine County Reporter had a condensed version of this obituary. They instead showed the date of death as Sunday, March 16.

At the time of the 1880 San Augustine Census, he was living with his brother, Burwell J. Lewis.

George married Laura Henrietta Loggins on 21 Jan 1893 in San Augustine County, Texas. Laura (daughter of William D. Loggins and Ursula Kirksey) was born on 5 Oct 1875 in Texas; died on 3 Aug 1975 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried in Chinquapin Cemetery (Loggins Family Burial Ground), Macune, San Augustine County, Texas. It appears he had been previously married. Listed with his family in the 1860 San Augustine County, Texas census, he was shown as married to 24 year old Arminta Haggerty. His oldest daughter, Precious, was age 13 (born ca 1847), who was born prior to his marriage to Araminta. His mother-in-law, Melinda Haggerty, is also living with them.

George married Araminta M. Haggerty on 12 Jan 1851 in San Augustine County, Texas. Araminta (daughter of Thomas Jefferson Haggerty and Malinda Bowie) was born about 1831 in Louisiana; died about 1875 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried in Chinquapin Cemetery (Loggins Family Burial Ground), Macune, San Augustine County, Texas. Notes:

At the time of the Sabine District census in 1835, Thomas and Malinda had living with them their two young daughters and two household servants. Next door to them were Malinda's brother, John Bowie, and the three Harvey children Malinda raised (her half-siblings)

Thomas married Malinda Bowie. Malinda (daughter of John Jones Bowie and Nancy Scoggins) was born in 1813 in Louisiana; was buried in Macune Baptist Church Cemetery, Macune, San Augustine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

White and Toole add a footnote indicating that a HOUSTON POST article quoted noted Texas Historian Lewis Kemp as stating that Malinda was a niece of James Bowie of Alamo fame.

Additionally, some Harvey children (Amanda b. 1823, Charles Clavin b. 10 Feb 1825, John Austin b. 26 Jan 1827)moved to the Ayish in San Augustine county in 1834 with Jefferson Haggerty and wife Malinda Bowie Haggerty. Jefferson Haggerty was Chief Justice (County Judge) of San Augustine County (1840), but was killed soon after in an ambush resulting from the Shelby County Feud. Malinda Bowie Haggerty was said to have been a niece of James Bowie of Alamo fame. "It is a known fact by descendants still living that she was a half-sister of the three Harvey children whom she brought to Texas and reared." (White and Toole, p 43).
