Her Texas Death Certificate showed her as a daughter of George Whitehead and Martha Jacks. Informant was Mrs. Charles Force. In 1940, she was the head of a household consisting of herself, and sons Duard and Harold. They lived in Sabine County on Center View Road, in the same house they had lived in five years previously. Evelyn was shown as age 62 and widowed. Both Duard and Harold were listed as single.

Vitura married Andrew Henderson McGown about 1894. Andrew (son of John Franklin McGown and Mary Elizabeth Loving) was born on 1 Mar 1866 in Texas; died on 23 Aug 1930; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. Josie Mildred McGown was born on 15 Apr 1896 in Texas; died on 25 Sep 1983 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas.
3. Duard Henderson McGown was born on 9 Dec 1901 in Texas; died in Dec 1967 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas.

Notes:

George Whitehead was the son of Martin Whitehead and Jane Martin. Jane was the dtr of Wm. Martin who, with his son, T.J. fought in the Texas Revolution. (White and Toole, p 54 - 55).

George married Martha E. Jacks. Martha (daughter of Nicholas Jacks, Jr. and Caroline Matilda Kemp) was born on 15 Jun 1845 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 16 Apr 1881 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

At the time of the 1850 Federal census, 26 year old Martin Whitehead, and 20 year old John Whitehead, were both listed as Farmers, and living in the household of William and Nancy ESTUS of Sabine County, Texas.

"William Martin and his son, Thomas Jefferson, received Bounty Land for their service in the Texas Revolution. William bought land in Sabine County from Lavina Popino (dau. of William Melton) in 1834. The Whitehead Cemetery is on this land." (White and Toole, p 88).

They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.

William and Harriett Martin moved their family from Mississippi to the Republic of Texas. (White and Toole, p 88). After William Martin's death--sometime after youngest son George was born ca 1838 and before the 1850 census---Harriett was said to have married second William Slaughter. At the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas, census, Harriett Slaughter, age 45, can be found with children Jane, Harriett and George B.
