    As of the 1860 census, she was living with her grandparents, J.T. and Levina Montgomery, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

    She was said to have married James VALLEE.

    Information on this family based on a signed and notarized affidavit sent from Marshall Texas Harrison County Historical Musuem. It was written by Vivia Addison, child of Elizabeth Montgomery. Name listed as Montgomery-Self. States that a fire at the court house in Colfax, and after the death of Uncle Vallee, the home at Valle's Landing was destroyed. Records no longer exist. The home was situated on the banks of the Red River, about 5 miles below Colfax, La known as Valle's Landing. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 82).

    Notes:

    According to tradition passed down by Lona Mae Duggan Gordan, it is believe that Pleasant killed a man in Sabine Parish and fled to Texas. He was on the third ward on patrol guard duty in Sabine Parish to stop 'agitators' from inciting insurrection among the slaves in the Parish. His written duties included visiting slave quarters and beating with a whip any slaves without passes. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 81-82).

    Notes:

    The daughter of Thomas Holden, Jr. and Elizabeth Flanagan. Her Holden line can be traced back to Massachusetts to Richard Holden, one of the original immigrants to come to America. Her gravesite is lost but Bible records can be found for this family in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 81).

  1. 4.  Joseph Turner Montgomery was born on 22 Mar 1780 in Mississippi; died on 15 Nov 1870 in Negreet, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

    Notes:

    A Joseph Montgomery was listed on the 1816 census in Adams County, Mississippi and on the 1818 Tax list for the same, later moving to the Neutral Strip-Negreet. He claimed lands in Sabine Parish in early 1820's cort in Natchitoches, La. However, he is listed as owning land as early as 1805 and being one of the settlers on the Rio Hondo lands. He was a private in the 12th and 13th consolidated Regiment, Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812. He was listed as owning 6 or more slaves in 1861. According to Lona Mae Duggan Gordon, Joseph lived in a double pen house. Usually constructed of Pine logs, there were one or more rooms in two separate enclosures under one roof. When first arriving in Sabine Parish, there were many bears that often would attack livestock, so Joseph brought the livestock into the cabin penned in a corner by the chimney for protection.

    Joseph Turner Montgomery, Lavinia Montgomery, and Nancy Morris all have their names on a bronze plaque beside the door of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Negreet which states, "On the third Sunday in December, Anno Domino, 1826, Zion Hill Church was constituted by the following Presbytery to wit: William Cook and James Martin." The land the church was built on was donated by Joseph. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 82-83).

    The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabien Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousant, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves. the owners of six or more in 1861 included Joseph F. Montgomery.

    At the time of the 1870 census enumeration, Joseph T. Montgomery, age 105, was living with his son and daughter-in-law, A J and Laura Mongomery, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. He was shown as born ca 1865 in Mississippi.

    Notes:

    The Stroud family of South Carolina was closely associated with the Bird Wall and Drury Wall family of South Carolina. Many members of this family either moved together from Tennessee and then to Louisiana, some settling in Tennessee and others in Sabine Parish. The name Bird Wall has been seen several times in Parish records in one form or another, but the identity of Nancy's first husband is not known. She married 2) John Morris (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 82).
