  1. 1.  Edward Claudius McLemoreEdward Claudius McLemore was born on 6 Mar 1867 in North Carolina (son of Lofton Hayes McLemore and Elizabeth Ann Bullard); died on 24 Jun 1930 in South Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia; was buried in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia.

    Notes:

Lived with his grandparents, Amos and Jemima McLemore, at the time of the 1880 census. Listed as Edward C on the 1900 census, and Claud E in 1910.

He was listed in the 1909-1910 Fayetteville NC City Directory as Edward C. McLEMORE, Clerk, A. J. BULLARD & Son....Home, 233 Davis Street

He was listed in the 1915-1916 Fayetteville NC City Directory as Edward C. McLEMORE, Agent, Life Insurance Co. of Virginia Res. 907 Person Street Wife: Lena

It appears they moved to Virginia prior to 1930.

Bonnie Seiler writes that his death was reported in the Virginia Pilot Newspaper on June 24, 1930. He apparently jumped from the upstairs window of his home and committed suicide.

  1. 2.  Lofton Hayes McLemoreLofton Hayes McLemore was born on 10 Mar 1844 in Sampson County, North Carolina (son of Amos McLemore and Jemima Simmons); died on 3 Oct 1906 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

According to Robert McLemore Butler, he was Pvt 2nd Co A 2nd Artillery Regt during the Civil War. He was born ca 1843 in Sampson County and the son of Amos McLemore (b. 1813). Lofton enlisted July 15, 1862 in Wake County. He was wounded May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Va. Reported absent for the next 11 months due to wounds. Discharged April 24, 1864 due to phthisis pulmonalis affecting both lungs. The Cumberland Plough Boys website instead shows that he servied in the North Carolina Regiment, 2nd Company E.

    http://ploughboys.org/tag/2nd-battalion-north-carolina-local-defense/page/2/

In 1869, Lofton was a witness, along with Zachariah ROYAL, to the Will of Zachariah ROYAL dated 28 Jun 1869. It was probated 12 Mar 1870. Zachariah's wife was Louisa ROYAL, and she was left the furniture, enough provisions for her support for one year and livestock...at her death to be divided equally between all five (5) children---Oliver ROYAL, Allen ROYAL, Rice ROYAL, Emely ROYAL and Nancy ROYAL. (Courtesy Robert McLemore Butler, who noted that Emily Royal was Lofton's wife).

After Lofton's death, his oldest sons, Edward and Amos, conveyed land they had inherited from him to their younger half brothers, O.B, Alvin and Dennis. As son Abner was not mentioned in the deed, it appears they may have died prior to its execution in 1910. Edward and and Amos's sister, Ida, was also not mentioned in the conveyence.

Lofton married Elizabeth Ann Bullard on 18 Sep 1866 in Sampson County, North Carolina. Elizabeth (daughter of James Bullard and Sarah Elizabeth Jones) was born on 12 Feb 1843 in Roseboro, Sampson County, North Carolina; died on 15 Apr 1875 in North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Elizabeth Ann Bullard was born on 12 Feb 1843 in Roseboro, Sampson County, North Carolina (daughter of James Bullard and Sarah Elizabeth Jones); died on 15 Apr 1875 in North Carolina.

    Notes:

Some researchers have shown that she and Lofton divorced, and that Elizabeth died in 1883. Bonnie Seiler, a descendant states that this is not correct. Her records indicated that Elizabeth died 15 April 1875.

Bonnie also notes that Elizabeth was marrid to George PARKER before she married Lofton Hayes McLemore. George was killed in the Civil War. Bonnie states that on the marriage record of Elizabeth and Loften Hayes she was listed as Elizabeth Parker, daughter of James and Sarah Bullard.

    Notes:

    Married:
On 18 Sept 1866, L.H. McLemore married Elizabeth BULLARD Parker. She was the daughter of James BULLARD and widow of George PARKER.

Diane McLemore Harrision, a descendant, shows Elizabeth with a date of death of April 15, 1875, and Lofton remarried and went on to have four more children with his second wife.

Some researchers have speculated that Lofton and Elizabeth divorced, as Elizabeth Bullard McLemore is said to be mentioned by name in the 1883 Will of her father, James Bullard. This is likely jsut a transcription error, as differing groups of descendants of Lofton and Elizabeth all have her date of death as circa 1875.

    Children:
    1. 1. Edward Claudius McLemore was born on 6 Mar 1867 in North Carolina; died on 24 Jun 1930 in South Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia; was buried in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia.
    2. Amos Bullard McLemore was born on 5 Mar 1869 in North Carolina; died on 3 Feb 1944 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.
    3. Ida Laura McLemore was born on 5 Sep 1871 in North Carolina; died about 1905.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Amos McLemore was born about 1813 in Sampson County, North Carolina (son of Tobias McLemore, Sr. and Sarah "Sallie" ???); died after 1887 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Based on the 1860 census, Amos appears to have been born ca. 1813.

Amos was said to be the son of Raiford McLemore by researcher Robert McLemore Butler. However, based on the 1820 and 1830 Sampson County, NC census enumeration, Raiford did not appear to have any sons that were this age. Additionally, Raiford McLemore appears to have also been the father or otherwise closely associated with an Amos McLemore who was born ca 1845. Finally, in the Division of the lands of Raiford McLemore, done ca 1864, Amos was not mentioned.

Due to all of these factors, it seems unlikely to me that Amos was a son of Raiford McLemore. It would therefore seem likely a that he was actually the son of one of Raiford's three older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.

Very little is known about the makeup of HEZEKIAH's family. It appears that Hezekiah may have died sometime after 1813 when his last land transaction in Sampson County is recorded. It is possible, however, that he left surviving children in or around Sampson County. It is also possible that he moved away from North Carolina, presumably taking his family with him. James L. McLemore, III thinks it a strong possibility that Hezekiah moved to South Carolina, where he died ca. 1818. Based on naming patterns, however, it seems Hezekiah was more likely the father of Raiford McLemore, born ca 1815 than of Amos, born ca 1813. It is possible, however, that he was the father of Amos.

HENRY had a son that was born between 1810 and 1820, and therefore he could be the father of Amos McLemore. Henry's family was in Bladen County, which was adjacent to Sampson County, at the time of the 1820 and 1830 census. Additionally, in 1870, a deed shows that Amos & Jemima McLemore sold property in Sampson County that was described as "Beginning at a stake on the old Pond two pines as pointers below his old house, whence with Henry McLEMORE's line...." That Amos's land adjoined land once owned by Henry adds weight to this possibility. However, James L. McLemore, III has ruled out Henry due to a Will filed by Henry in Georgia, and Amos is NOT included in his list of children by either of his two wives. Henry's sons born between 1910 and 1915 appear to have been John Wright McLemore and Wilson McLemore, and therefore Henry could not have been the father of Amos.

Finally, TOBIAS McLemore, was also listed as having a son born between 1810 and 1815. By process of elimination, Tobias seems to be the most likely fit as being the father of Amos, unless of course Amos was the son of Hezekiah and Raiford, also born ca 1810-1815, was the son of Tobias.

Based on all of the above, it is assumed that Amos is the son of Tobias, and Raiford the son of Hezekiah. Further proof should be sought out to support both assumptions.

James married Sarah Elizabeth Jones. Sarah was born about 1816 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1883 in North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Sarah Elizabeth Jones was born about 1816 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1883 in North Carolina.

    Notes:

    Married:
Based on the 1860 and 1870 census, along with his Will, James's Bullard was married (at least at that time) to a woman named Elizabeth. However, Robert McLemore Butler shows he and Sarah JONES as being the mother of Elizabeth Ann Bullard. If this is correct, than Sarah Jones died sometime after Elizabeth Bullard was born in 1842 but before the 1860 census. Therefore, it is not known if Henry, James, Sarah, Ann and Thomas are the children of James and Sarah OR James and Elizabeth. This could be resolved if a marriage record could be found for James and Sarah AND for James and Elizabeth.

    Children:
    1. John Bullard was born after 1836 in North Carolina; and died.
    2. Martha J. Bullard was born about 1840 in North Carolina; and died.
    3. 3. Elizabeth Ann Bullard was born on 12 Feb 1843 in Roseboro, Sampson County, North Carolina; died on 15 Apr 1875 in North Carolina.
    4. Henry G. Bullard was born about 1844 in North Carolina; and died.
    5. James L. Bullard was born about 1846 in North Carolina; and died.
    6. Sarah M. "Sallie" Bullard was born about 1847 in North Carolina; and died.
    7. Matilda Ann Bullard was born about 1849 in North Carolina; and died.
    8. Thomas F. Bullard was born about 1852 in North Carolina; and died.

It was also indicated that neither Sarah's could read or write. Presumably Tobias was able to. Additionally, in Sampson County on 10 May1862 a Tabitha McLEMORE married Mechack HALES. Might this be one of the missing daughters of Tobias McLemore? If she was his daughter, however, it is not known where she was at the time of the 1850 or 1860 census.

Robert McLemore Butler notes that a Tobias McLEMORE was a Pvt. Co A Regt 30 Inf. Born in 1838 in Sampson County. He was a turpentine distiller. Enlisted September 1, 1861 in Clinton. Hospitalized August 1862 at Lynchburg VA.
