At the time of the 1900 census, 75 year old Nancy Spell was living with the family. Assumed to be the mother of Nancy Elizabeth. Her date of birth was listed as Mar 1824, her marital status single, and her relationship, inexplicably, as "Nephew."

In 1910, Nancy Elizabeth appears to be listed twice, as follows:

In 1920, she is living with Oscar B., in the Little Coharie Township of Sampson County, and nearby Alvin and Dennis.

In 1930, she is living with her son Dennis in Little Coharie Township, and is listed as Elizabeth, age 69.

Her tombstone, in the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Sampson County, NC, shows her as "Nancy E. wife of L. H. McLemore 10 Mar 1860-6 Aug 1930, A tender mother and a faithful friend."

Nancy married Lofton Hayes McLemore about 1877. Lofton (son of Amos McLemore and Jemima Simmons) was born on 10 Mar 1844 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died on 3 Oct 1906 in Sampson County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Robert McLemore Butler thinks it possible that the mother of Lofton's four youngest children was actually Emily ROYAL, and that "we suspect that after Lofton's death, or their divorce, (his first wife) Elizabeth BULLARD remarried and her new husband was named SPELL"

The 1900 census indicates that Lofton and his current wife had been married 23 years, and that she was the mother of four children, all living.

2. Oscar Bernice McLemore was born on 15 Jan 1881 in North Carolina; died on 20 May 1949 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina; was buried in Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Bonnetsville, Sampson County, North Carolina.
3. Alvin Hayes McLemore was born on 31 May 1884 in North Carolina; died on 17 Jan 1941 in Sampson County, North Carolina; was buried in Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Bonnetsville, Sampson County, North Carolina.
4. Dennis Lofton McLemore was born on 20 Jun 1889 in North Carolina; died on 2 Feb 1943 in Durham, Durham County, North Carolina; was buried in Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Bonnetsville, Sampson County, North Carolina.
