James married Rebecca Harwood, daughter of Daniel and Ann (BARHAM) HARWOOD, pursuant to a marriage bond issued in Sussex County on August 4, 1796 (Sussex Marriage Register, p. 82). They are known to have had at least fours sons and two daughters: James Jr., Zebulon, Alexander, Howell, Sarah Elizabeth ("Liza") and Theresa G. ("Tracy"). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 79).

1. James McLemore was born between 1799 and 1801 in Sussex County, Virginia; died about 1877 in Southampton County, Virginia.
2. Alexander McLemore was born after 1803 in Sussex County, Virginia; and died.
3. Howell McLemore was born after 1804 in Sussex County, Virginia; died before Jun 1844 in Southampton County, Virginia.
4. Zebulon McLemore was born after 1807 in Sussex County, Virginia; and died.
5. Sarah Elizabeth McLemore was born after 1809 in Sussex County, Virginia; and died.
6. Thomasina G. McLemore was born about 1810 in Sussex County, Virginia; died on 23 Jul 1885 in Southhampton County, Virginia.
7. Theresa G. "Tracy" McLemore was born about 1815 in Sussex County, Virginia; and died.
