  1. 1.  Martha Mariah Barkley was born before 1812 in North Carolina; died between 1846 and 1855.

    Notes:

Looking for information on the ancestry of John Barkley who appears in the records of Northampton County, NC, from about 1800 on until he disappears therefrom after 1820. He was married to Rebecca Doles (died before May 18, 1820), daughter of Francis Doles, sometime between 1805 and 1812, and they had five children, Francis Doles Barkley, Martha Mariah Barkley (gg-grandmother of the undersigned), Jesse F Barkley, John R. Barkley and Rebecca J. Barkley. He was also apparently a fairly prominent person for, according to his grandson, Benj. F. McLemore, John Barkley was a NC state senator. Despite this info, I have been unable to connect him. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would in return be willing to supply info on his McLemore descendants and/or info on his wife's family. Reply either here or directly to:

Martha married James McLemore on 21 Aug 1834. James (son of James McLemore and Rebecca ???) was born between 1799 and 1801 in Sussex County, Virginia; died about 1877 in Southampton County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
On August 21, 1834, James McLemore gave his bond to marry Martha Mariah BARKLEY, daughter of John BARKLEY of Northampton County, North Carolina. Her father was a man of prominence in his county, serving for a time as state senator; he was apparently also an immigrant from Scotland according to family records, an assertion not disproved by the Northampton County records where he mysteriously appears shortly before 1800. In 1839 James and his wife Martha conveyed to her brother Francis D. BARKLEY all of her interest in a piece of Barkley property belonging to her family (Northampton Deed Book 28, p. 453). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 80).

    Children:
    1. Joseph McLemore was born about 1836 in Southampton County, Virginia; and died.
    2. Benjamin Franklin McLemore was born on 3 May 1839 in Southampton County, Virginia; died on 29 Jan 1911 in Southampton County, Virginia; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, Southampton County, Virginia.
    3. Thomas A. McLemore was born about 1840 in Southampton County, Virginia; died on 7 Mar 1857 in Virginia.
    4. Rebecca J. McLemore was born about 1845 in Southampton County, Virginia; and died.
    5. Emma McLemore was born between 1834 and 1846 in Southampton County, Virginia; died between 1834 and 1846 in Southhampton County, Virginia.
