Carl D. "Wincey" Smith

Carl D. "Wincy" Smith, 72, of Hemphill died at 8:42 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his residence. Smith was born July 15, 1932 in Hemphill as a son of the late Alfred Smith and Eve Huffman Smith and had been a lifelong resident of Sabine County. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and owner of Eve's Grocery in Hemphill. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Smith of Hemphill and Whitney Smith of Dallas. He was preceded in death by his son, Wincey Lane Smith. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. I. W. Ferguson and Bro. Fred Rany officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

Eve (daughter of Henry Washington Huffman and Arena "Rena" Walker) was born on 22 Dec 1901 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 9 Apr 1995 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Eve Smith

Eve Huffman Smith, 93, of Hemphill died at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 1995, at Hemphill Care Center.

Born Dec. 22, 1901, in Hemphill as a daughter of the late Arena (Walker) and Henry Washington Huffman, she was a lifelong resident of Sabine County. She was a member of the Methodist Church and a retired merchant as operator of Eve's Grocery in Hemphill.

Survivors: a son, Carl D. "Wincey" Smith of Hemphill; two granddaughters, Cindy Smith and Whitney Smith; and two grandsons, Shane Smith and Tracy Smith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Wendell Ferguson, Bro. D. W. McCaseland, and Bro. Richard Bass officiating.

Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

From "I Remember" by Mary Howell

I remember Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Smith who had a grocery store in what is called Beanville. I remember going to his store on Saturday nights to get a Dixie cup of ice cream. Several of Mr. E.B. children and grandchildren followed in their father's footsteps and became store owners. Duvergn CORDRAY, Shine Smith, Velma RASH and Alfred Smith all ran local mom and pop businesses.

Henry married Arena "Rena" Walker about 1878. Arena (daughter of John Bailey Walker and Sarah Adeline Davis) was born in 1862 in Mississippi; died in 1938 in Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Henry married Mary Ann Morris before 1868. Mary (daughter of Shadrach H. Morris and Mary "Polly" Sarah Nelson) was born on 18 Feb 1836 in Louisiana; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Married 1st a Roberts (sic) and 2nd Henry Smith. (White and Toole, p 63).

On the 1880 Sabine County census, a Robert Patrick, step-son, is listed in the household as well. (White and Toole, p 33).

Peggy Choate emailed, in February 2012, that " . Mary Ann was married first to Henry Patrick and they had 3 children: Ida Alice, Henry Hood and Robert Patrick. He died after the 3rd child was born. After Henry Patrick, died Mary Morris married Henry Smith. She then became know as Grandma Smith. She was present at my father's birth in Zwolle Louisiana in 1922. Present were Mary Ann Morris Patrick Smith, her daugheter Ida Alice Patrick Burns, granddaughter Mary Annie Burns Henderson and gtgranddaughter Martha Henderson McCormick and baby Hugh McCormick (my Dad). It seems that the women of that family are long lived."

Robert married Frances Jane Gomer. Frances (daughter of Augustus C. Gomer and Margaret Ann Low) was born on 24 Dec 1863 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 24 Jan 1944. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

"The father of "Kit" Huffman was thought to be John [Huffman]...also the father of Asa (Jasper Co.) Owen Huffman who also came to Sabine Co. and Leah and Penny who remained in N.C. The family emigrated from Germany and spelled their name Hoffman."

Was shown on the muster roll of Captain J.M. Burroughs Company of the Sabine County Volunteer Infantry, CSA, and was enlisted at Hemphill, Texas by Drury Field for 3 months duty on January 15, 1863.

At the time of the 1810 Federal census, he was enumerated with his daughter and son-in-law, Callie and Thomas McBride, in Sabine County, Texas.

Christopher married Angelina Jones on 2 Feb 1854 in Jasper County, Texas. Angelina (daughter of Mary ???) was born about 1827 in Florida; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
