Class of 1945 Reunion

The San Augustine High School class of 1945 held a reunion at the Columns bed and breakfast on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Those attending included (front row) Mrs. Harlowe W. Johnson (taught this class Geometry, American History and Girl's P.E.), Frances Murphy Clay, Allene Sowell Reeder, Agnes Williams Sparks, (2nd Row) Betty Jean Sparks Cartwright, Marie Isenlitter Smith, Brooksie Butler Sanders, June Norvell Ham, Myrtle Young Ferguson, Joy Holt Miller, Bobbie Noble Thompson, Mary Beth Allen Walker, Betty Sanders Elwell, Corkey Epps, HAROLD BIRDWELL, Pat Henry Fussell, and Richard Murphy.

Mr. Harold R. Birdwell, age 88, was born January 20, 1928, in the Chinquapin Community of San Augustine County to Oscar and Nona Lee (Ramsey) Birdwell. He passed from this life unexpectedly at his residence in San Augustine on January 26, 2016.

Mr. Birdwell was a lifelong resident of San Augustine, graduating from San Augustine High School in 1945. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Augustine. He was also a member of the National Guards. He began his career with an engineering firm in 1946 and went on to become a surveyor for Temple Lumber Company in Pineland, Texas in 1952. In 1992, after 40 years of service with Temple, he chose to retire. He was also a rancher and poultry farmer, being a hard worker always. He loved hunting and sports, but most of all he doted on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed and remembered always by his wife, Dorothy Birdwell of Rosevine; son, Robert Birdwell and wife, Kelly of Broaddus; daughters, Brenda Buffington and husband, Joseph of Buna; Mary Lou Rhoades and husband Micheal of Granbury; grandchildren, Michael Wayne Jacobs and wife, Jaleisha of Norfolk, Va.,Ashley Southerland and husband David of Hamilton, Tx., Brett Garrick of Mobile, Al., Kelsey Garrick and husband Steven of Spurger, Tx., and Nico Birdwell and wife Jami of San Augustine, Tx; and great-grandchildren, Michael Jacobs Jr., Alyssa Jacobs, Landon Southerland, Noah Southerland, Aniston Birdwell and Aubrey Birdwell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, 1:00 p.m., Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine, 316 West Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas. Visitation will be Friday, January 29, 2016, 5 til 8 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Memorial Garden in San Augustine County located off Highway 147 North.

Oscar married Nona Lee Ramsey on 27 Dec 1925. Nona (daughter of Hamp W. Ramsey and Lula May Byley) was born on 27 Apr 1909 in San Augustine County, Texas; died on 15 Dec 2000 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried in Liberty Hill Memorial Garden, San Augustine, San Augustine County, Texas. Notes:

Dolores Burton shows "Norman E. (Thaduis) Birdwell was the ninth child of James Birdwell and NANCY Cogburn. He was born Aug. 07, 1881 in Sabine County Texas." Jame's wife is listed on census and other records as Mary, however, and not Nancy.

David Pike writes that Norman died of pneumonia after complications from severe burns received in a fire.

Norman married Blanche Henley on 14 Nov 1900 in San Augustine County, Texas. Blanche was born on 16 Aug 1881 in Texas; died on 28 May 1914 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

She was married first to a Birdwell, and was later the second wife of Joseph Fuller. They had two children together, and sadly Blanche died of tuberculosis some five years after her second marriage. Her stepsons, Price and Brooks, died of this as well. Her step-daughter, Ethel was also infected, and was confined to a tuberculosis santitarium in the Dallas area as a young woman. Ethel survived, however, living into her eighties.

Miss Strong; I must apologize for jumping too fast. Blanch Birdwell is in my data. Her first husband was Norman E.(Thaduis)Birdwell. The ninth child of James Birdwell and Nancy Cogburn. He was born Aug. 07, 1881 in Sabine County Texas. He died Jan. 28, 1907, in Sabine or possibley San Augustine Co. Texas. Her name was Blanch Henley B: Aug. 16, 1881, and D: May 28, 1914. Notes:

David Pike writes that James Birdwell arrived in Texas in 1854, and that he enlisted in Company "H", 13th Texas Regiment on the 18 Feb, 1862. Served in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Was captured by Union Forces at Pleasant Hill, LA 9 Apr 1864, released in a prisoner exchange at Blair's Landing on the Red River, 20 Apr 1864. Discharged ca 5 May of 1865 at Hempstead, TX.

Henry, second child of J. A. and Mary's, was born 11 Nov 1864. This would indicate that James was home on leave in march of that year, just prior to the Battle of Pleasant Hill.

25 Jan 1906-made application (1st) for CSA pension. It was disapproved.
11 Aug 1909- made second application for pension. It was also disapproved.
He may have still owned land in Newton County. This may have been reason for these disapprovals. On his application he listed real and personal property as:
100 acres - $200.00
1 Pony - 45.00
2 Cows - 20.00
3 Shoats - 3.00
Wife's estate listed as her interest of the 100 acres.

David Pike also notes that "Family Search has James born in (Newton) Alabama. I do not believe this is correct. Also, some accounts have him and his bro. John as children of John and Mary Allen Birdwell. I believe this is also incorrect. "

James married Mary Alice Cogburn about 1859 in Newton County, Texas. Mary was born on 10 Oct 1842 in Alabama; died on 3 Nov 1909 in Bronson, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Was she also called Nancy? According to an email from Dolores Burton, she was named Nancy Cogburn. However, on the 1880 and on the 1900 Sabine County Census, the wife of James Birdwell is listed as Mary. In fact, in the 1900 census, she is shown as Mary A. (Cogburn).

David Pike, a Cogburn researcher, also shows her as Mary Alice. He indicates that she was probably born in Georgia, though census records report Alabama, and on one occasion Arkansas.

Notes:

Said to be the son of Thomas BYERLY and Saran JORDAN. Middle name sometimes shown as Harrison, although his middle initial on his death certificate, and other records, usually shown as B.
