    The North Carolina Death record of her son shows her as Emma Carter. Robert McLemore Butler instead has her listed as Emily D. Carter.

    Said to be one of ten children born to Carlton C. CARTER and Julia Ann PORTER of Cumberland County, North Carolina.

    "My great-great grandfather was Carlton C Carter. (variations of his name are Calton, Cotton and, on his death certificate, he is listed as Calvin!)He was born April 1848 in Cumberland County, NC. He died after 1929. He is listed in the census records as being a farmer and when first married he worked as a turpentine hand. He married Julia Ann Porter, daughter of James Porter and Barbara Ann McMillan, on 27 October 1869. Julia Ann was born May 1853 and died 18 May 1922. They had 10 children: 1) EMILY D CARTER, Mar 1870- 4 Aug 1902, married DALLAS O McLEMORE. 2) Barbara Isobel Carter, July 1872-18 Nov 1923, married Jonathan J starling. 3) Mary E Carter, born 1874 died between 1880-1900. 4) James Gadis Carter, 1875-25 Dec 1950, married Rebecca J Averitte. 5) Burnice Harvey Carter, (my great grandpa, mentioned above). 6) Duncan Robinson Carter, 04 Jan 1879-22 October 1942, married Nina Mae Hair. 7) Jonathan L Carter, Jan 1882-17th October 1918, married Ruby Caine. 8) Chester H Carter, Dec 1883-?, married Elizabeth Hall. 9) unknown. 10) unknown."
