Mr. McDaniel died September 12, 2012 at the age of 98.

Clement McDaniel, known to many as "Mac", was born in Bayou, Texas on November 3, 1913, the son of Nolan Earnest McDaniel and wife Ella Walker McDaniel. In 1933, he married Ardell Brittain, the daughter of Docia Latham Brittain Easley and Penn Brittain. They were married 73 years and had a strong, lifelong love affair, from which came five children. His beloved wife preceded him, as did two daughters, Ether Murl (Merrill) Perry and Joyce McDaniel. Surviving children and spouses are: Barbara and Wilbur Smith of Gainesville, Texas, Carlin and Mary Ann McDaniel of Hemphill, Texas, and Glen and Dee McDaniel of Lufkin, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Kristie Vick, John McDaniel, Casey Weghorst, Brett McDaniel, and Kyle McDaniel; and four great-grandchildren, Colter and Sarah Vick and Tatum and Hank Weghorst.

Mr. "Mac" was proud of his family, which he considered the most important thing in his life. His Christian faith and affiliation with the Baptist Church since 1946 were also important to him, guiding him through many trials and tribulations in life.
When he was 15, "Mac" left his cocoon in East Texas and joined the Citizens' Military Training Camp, where he served for four summers, earning an officer's commission in the United States Army. He went on to become what would now be called a disc jockey at Radio Station KRIC in Beaumont. In 1941, he began his career as an air traffic controller. He was very proud of his work and remembered well the many times he helped the famous and not so famous, one of the famous being then Vice-President Lyndon Johnson, as he would fly into and out of the Austin airport.

Mr. McDaniel was an avid and expert gardener, and many people were the recipients of his garden produce. He loved people, and spent a lifetime giving to others. He will be sorely missed by many.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oak Hill Cemetery Association, c/o Weldon McDaniel, P.O. Box 174, Hemphill, TX 75948.

    THE McDANIEL FIVE (Photo submitted)

How unique is it to see siblings, five of them, all in their 80s and all still living and doing well except for the things that getting older brings to all of us? I would say it is very seldom heard of and when we do hear and see it, we need to pause and celebrate! Above are all five children of Nolan Ernest, sr. (Mac) and Ella Lee McDaniel. Seated, from left: Wendell, 89, (who will be 90 Sept. 20) of Yellowpine, Clement, 88 of Hemphill and Ernest, 85, of Yellowpine; standing: Evelyn (Easley), 80, of San Juan Capistrano, CA, and Zuda (Tinsley), 82, or Hemphill. They were all born in Sabine County and raised in the old community of Mason Town, now known as Six Mile. They were raised when times were hard ans each had to pull their own weight, when walking was something they had to do to get where they wanted to go and not for exercise. Going barefooted was something they did, not for fun, but out of necessity. Getting to school was a chore. During grade school years they walked three miles to attend school in Six Mile and as high school years approached, some stayed with friends in Hemphill and Yellowpine so they could attend school. Even with all the marks set against them, the five grew up to be fine upstanding citizens of the communities they chose as grown men and women to start and raise their families. So much could be said about each of these five people (I am the niece of Wendell, but claim them all as my aunts and uncles) and wish for each, all the blessings that only God can bestow on them in the years he chooses to give them.

    Children:
    1. James Wendell McDaniel was born on 20 Sep 1912 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 7 Jan 2011 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried on 10 Jan 2011 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Middle name shown by family descendants as Walton, his mothers maiden name.

Laura Buckmaster and Barbara Yancey Dore also show his middle name as Watson.

Robert Cecil McDaniel wrote, in his autobiography, that after "his grandparents married, they moved to the Bayou Community, located about four miles north of Fairdale. They lived there until Grandpa's death on December 10, 1899, at the age of fifty-five."

    Children:
    1. Winnie Luthenia "Thena" McDaniel was born on 30 Sep 1870 in Texas; died on 18 Jan 1944 in Sabinetown, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

  3. 10.  John Bailey Walker was born in Dec 1839 in Bibb County, Alabama; died on 25 Jun 1917 in Sabine County, Texas.

John married Eunice "Una" Carter White on 6 Mar 1883 in Sabine County, Texas. Eunice (daughter of Henry Strickland White, Sr and Ann Vardeman) was born on 7 Jun 1852 in Texas; died on 16 Jul 1925. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Eunice "Una" Carter White was born on 7 Jun 1852 in Texas (daughter of Henry Strickland White, Sr and Ann Vardeman); died on 16 Jul 1925.

    Notes:

On the 1920 Sabine County census, she was living in the household of her son, John B. Walker in Precinct #1 of Sabine County, household #579/601. She was listed as a 67 year old widow.

    Notes:

    Married:
John Walker, a 42 year old Widower, lived next door to 28 year old Eunice White, who was living at home with her parents, at the time of the 1880 census.

Charles White also lists them as being the parents of a Emma Walker, dob unknown, who married Bence Ener. He cites Mrs. A.V. White, THEY CAME TO TEXAS. However, I was unable to locate Emma on the 1900 census with her parents. She would have had to have been under age 17 at the time (The Walker's were married in 1883) or already married. However, Bency Ener was still living at home in 1900, an 11 year old son of Mart and Harriett Ener in Precinct #7, #122/122. Additionally, in Sabine County Marriage Records 1900-1910 by Toole, it is shown that EVA Walker married Bencie Ener on 6 March 1910.

    Children:
    1. Anna Elizabeth Walker was born on 3 Sep 1884 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 16 Jan 1909 in Sabine County, Texas.
    2. Evaline Emma Walker was born on 19 Nov 1885 in Sabine County, Texas; and died.
    3. Ruth Alice Walker was born on 2 Jan 1887 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 15 Jul 1967; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.
    4. 5. Ella Walker was born on 24 Feb 1889 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 20 Apr 1955 in Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas.
    5. John Bailey Walker, Jr. was born on 12 Feb 1891 in Sabine County, Texas.
