Generation: 2

    Notes:

Douglas Wright shows that he died young, ca 1860 in Hamilton County, Texas. Will Johnson has a later date of death, after 1880, also in Hamilton County. However, Melba Gene McLemore has him marrying Ada Cannefax in 1888, putting his date of death later still. Additionally, a James and Ada Wright can be found in Hamilton County, Texas as of the 1910 cenus. By 1920, Ada was widowed, and living with a son, George, and daughter Eula, who had also been widowed.

    Married:
Melba Gene McLemore cites their marriage record as reading James Nichols WRIGHT and Miss Ada CANNEFAX, 01/25/1888, 11 Page 015. "C-Brides Hamilton County, Texas Marriages Prior to 1900". Three courthouse fires (Sept, 1863, Mar 1877, and Feb 1886 destroyed the earlies marriage record books. Following the 1886 fire, some pre-fire marriages were recorded on lists in the County Clerk's Office. These marriages have "//" in place of a marriage book number. The handwriting on some of these records is almost impossible to read.

    Children:
    1. Jessie Wright was born about 1896 in Texas; and died.
    2. 1. George Wright was born about 1898 in Texas; and died.
    3. Eula Wright was born about 1900 in Texas; and died.
    4. Ada Wright was born about 1903 in Texas; and died.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  James Wright was born about 1816 in Kentucky (son of Benjamin Wright and Hannah McLemore); died about 1855 in Mississippi.

    Notes:

James Wright was a member of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Lincoln County, Tennessee by 1840.

Middle name sometimes shown as HARRISON.

Melba Gene McLemore found a Power of Attorney from James Wright to William H. Ragsdale, proven by oath of John WILLY and John ISOM, GI Cty., TN Cty. Ct. Min. p 201.

Will Johnson shows him, apparently in error, as dying after 1870 in Illinois. This contradicts the research of both Douglas Wright and Melba Gene McLemore, who both show his death much earlier, Doug Wright shows he died in Hamilton County, Texas whereas Melba Gene shows he died in Mississippi. He is not listed with his wife and children at the time of the 1860 Rusk County, Texas census.

(Research):See Notes for Eliza Jane McLemore for census transcriptions

James married Eliza Jane McLemore on 24 Apr 1839 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Eliza (daughter of Sterling C. McLemore and Martha C. "Patsy" Whitaker) was born on 6 Dec 1819 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; died on 23 May 1883 in Texas; was buried in Honey Creek Cemetery, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Eliza Jane McLemore was born on 6 Dec 1819 in Lincoln County, Tennessee (daughter of Sterling C. McLemore and Martha C. "Patsy" Whitaker); died on 23 May 1883 in Texas; was buried in Honey Creek Cemetery, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas.

    Notes:

In Betty Via's book about the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church of Lincoln County, Tennesse, an Eliza Wright, member 1840, joined by letter, June 1844, is listed. Betty notes that this Eliza is believed to be the wife of James Wright.

Douglas Wright shows that after James died, she married second, around 1860, Jack Thompson (1815-1870). Melba Gene McLemore reports that Jack was also said to be buried in Honey Creek Cemetery, but if so his headstone is long gone as it can not be seen in this cemetery.

Melba Gene McLemore provided the following excerpt of a letter from her ancestor, Keton Jones McLemore, that relates to Eliza Jane McLemore Wright Thompson:

    Keton's Letter March 1, 1870 (Partial)
    :
"If you hear from Thad, don't fail to let me know immediately, --- I rec'd. a letter from your cousin Jack yesterday, he was then at your cousin Eliza Thompsons in Travis Co. & I have just answered his letter, directed my letter to Onion Creek, care of Sterling J. Wright, and if Jack should be at your home, as he spoke something in his letter of coming there, you can inform him of that fast."

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Benjamin Wright was born about 1794 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; died after 1840 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Melba Gene McLemore thinks his middle name is Harrison, but this is not proven.

Julia Molitz has church records relating to the Benjamin Wright family that she shared with Melba Gene McLemore. They are from the book "Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via. These records show that Benjamin Wright was an 1833 constituting member; on 1840 membership list; joined by letter June, 1844; delegate to the association in 1844-1845, 1858-1849, and in 1851, on 1852 and 1859 membership lists; granted letter, August 1859. The book notes that Benjamin Wright was born about 1795 and married his wife, Hannah before 1816, and that they lived in Lincoln (now Moore) County, Tennessee.

Benjamin married Hannah McLemore on 19 Sep 1814 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Hannah (daughter of Sterling McLemore and Rebecca ???) was born between 1794 and 1800 in North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Hannah McLemore was born between 1794 and 1800 in North Carolina (daughter of Sterling McLemore and Rebecca ???).

    Notes:

Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. These are all from Fayette Co, KY and apparently traveled together to Lincoln Co, TN."

    http://www.jenforum.org/mclemore/messages/768.html

According to "Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via, Hannah Wright was an 1833 constituting member, wife of Benjamin Wright; on the 1840 membership list; granted letter n.d; joined by letter, June, 1844; on 1852 membership list. A footnote after her name indicates that Hannah's maiden name appears to be McLemore, [but that] research still inconclusive.

Julia Molitz (jmolitz@cox.net), a member of the "Chesnut Ridge Cousins" genealogy study group indicated that she could not find Benjamin and Hannah any place on the 1850 or 1860 census, but did find a Benjamin and Mary H. WRIGHT on the 1850 TN Census and the same family on the 1860 Berry Co., MO census, but did not know if this family was the same one that lived in Lincoln County (now Moore County), Tennessee.

Julia further indicates that census records show that Benjamin and Hannah had about ten children, seven girls and three boys, but that the identity of all the children is not yet conclusive.

Citing the book "Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via, she suspects that the "Mary [Wright] that was received by experience, September 1855; granted letter, August 1859 must have been a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah. Rebecca WRIGHT must have been a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah as well." The book itself notes that an Elizabeth Wright, on the 1852 church membership list, is also believed to have been one of the daughters of Benjamin and Hannah.

Melba also indicated that the widowed Martha is listed as the head of household at the time of the 1830 Lincoln County, TN census.
