According to Linda King Davenport, James H. Dorsey was one of nine children born to Alexander (Sr.) and Patsey DORSEY; and grandson of Cornelius and Martha DORSEY of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She shows that his siblings were Margaret (b. 1822 SC), Alexander, Jr. (b. 1828 SC), and Wesley (b. 1830 SC).

James married Lucinda Reeves on 23 Dec 1842 in Talledega County, Alabama. Lucinda (daughter of Richard Lawson Reeves and Alenna Rene "Allie" Bates) was born about 1825 in South Carolina; died before 1860 in Talledega County, Alabama. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Linda King Davenport writes that "My Lucinda Reeves and James H. Dorsey (son of Alexander & Patsey) married before 23 Dec 1842 by W. McCann, Minister of the Gospel in Talladega Co, AL. Lucinda's sister, Mary Reeves, married James H. Dorsey, Jr. (son of James H. Dorsey, Sr. & Unknown) on the same date by the same person. The marriage licenses were returned on 23 Dec 1842. "

1. Martha Dorsey was born about 1843 in Alabama; and died.
2. Mary E. Dorsey was born about 1846 in Alabama; and died.
3. Joseph Taylor Dorsey was born on 15 Jul 1848 in Talledega County, Alabama; died on 19 Jul 1920 in Texas; was buried in Myrtle Springs Cemetery, Geneva, Sabine County, Texas.
