A digital image of his actual Texas Death certificate is viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. At the time of his death he was married and his home address was Portland, San Patricio County, Texas. His birthplace was Maranda City, Texas, with his parents names not listed, "unable to obtain" was instead written. He died in the shome of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Alexander of Portland, Mrs. Alexander also being the informant. He was buried in Three Rivers, Texas.

The Handbook of Texas online notes that Miranda City, Texas was an oil boomtown.

Edward Hyatt, on his "John Bell Descendants" tree at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project, shows him as a son of Thomas Jefferson Bell of Cherokee, Alabama by his first wife, Marinda Rucker.

James married Lilla Emma Abernathy on 9 Oct 1894 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Lilla (daughter of Mial Smith Abernathy and Louisa McLemore) was born on 18 Aug 1877 in Limestone County, Alabama; died on 30 Oct 1937 in Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The 1880 census shows her born in Alabama, and the family residing in Limestone County, Alabama. David Merrill instead has her place of birth as Georgia.

"One day [John McLemore]...was with his Uncle Maclin Bass McLemore in Rogersville. Maclin was a pilot on the Shoals. The Shoals, being a treacherous body of water and rapids, took a skilled person to navigate. That fateful day John and Maclin were captured by the army. Thinking John was too young (he was 15); he was told to go home and tell his aunt what had happened to her husband. Legend has it that Maclin was never heard from again." (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).

He built a dogtrot house with one side log and the other frame, surrounded by large trees and log dependencies in an ideal rural setting. When Maclin McLemore returned from the ardous task of piloting boats over the treacherouse Tennessee River Shoals, he liked to prop his feet up in comfort. He found that comfortable place in the story-and-a-half dogtrot house which he built around the time of his marriage in 1843. (The Lure and Lore of Limestone County, p. 147)

It is noted that Nancy and her children were ALSO enumerated on the Lauderdale County census dated 18 July 1870. Perhaps they lived on/near the border and were counted twice? Or lived part time in both locations? For whatever reason, here is the second listing. Note the slight difference in the children's ages, PLUS an additional child (Ulisses, female?, age 4) being shown:
