Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Sims

Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Sims, 89, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 31 at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Arlington, Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Irving.

Mrs. Sims was born near Hemphill and lived there while growing up. She moved back to Hemphill in 1965 and lived there until 1978 when she moved to Grand Prarie to be near her boys. She attended school in Hemphill. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan Jay and Mitty Smith; husband, Forest Earl Sims; and son, John David White, Jr.

Survivors include her sons, Benny Ray White and wife Marilyn; Paul David White and wife Maria; Marion Elno White and wife Inez, and Forrest Earl Sims, Jr. and wife Lisa; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as numerous other loving family and friends.

Jay and Emily Smith

Bryan Jay Smith Sr., 96, of Hemphill, died early Thursday June 8, 1995, at Hemphill Care Center. His wife, Emily Edgar Smith, died early Friday, June 9, 1995, at Hemphill Care Center.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 5, 1899, in Wiergate as a son of the late Ester Ann (Miller) and Daniel Vinson Smith and had lived in Sabine County several years. Mrs. Smith was born July 31, 1901, as a daughter of the late Paynie Jackie (Gooch) and James Valentine Edgar, and was a lifelong resident of Sabine County.

He is survived by a son, B. J. Smith Jr. of Hillster, and she is survived by a sister, Florence McBride of Hemphill.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. W. Clarence Howell officiating. Mr. Smith was buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Fairmount and Mrs. Smith was buried at the Hemphill City Cemetery.

Albert married Mary Elizabeth Sibley on 11 May 1871 in Sabine County, Texas. Mary (daughter of Capt. Reddick Pitt Sibley, C. S. A. and Nancy Ann Matilda Low) was born on 7 Apr 1853 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 7 Feb 1939 in Newton County, Texas; was buried in Mount Sinai Cemetery, Fairdale, Sabine County, Texas. It is said the Rev. Smith had 4 wifes and 23 children in total. He was a Methodist Minister and a veteran of the War of 1812. His tombstones notes that he was a "Private Miss Militia, War of 1812." It is not certain whether he was born in Virginia or South Carolina.

William married Nancy Ann Shilling on 10 Sep 1849 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Nancy was born on 16 Aug 1819 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 3 Feb 1893; was buried in Mill Creek Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Also married a Walker? (Rootsweb World Connect Project: Hill Family Page). Helen Schluter's 1860 Census noted that she was the widow of James Walker of Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

"Aaron came to Texas in December 1840, with bro. Josiah and Isaiah." (White and Toole, p 47).

Joseph Thipgpen writes that they lived in Angelina County, Texas. He also stated that on 9-18-1852, " ISIAH MARTIN WAS THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE ESTATE OF AARON MARTIN. ON DEED RECORDS DATED 8-2-1853, JOSIAH MARTIN WAS THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE ESTATE."

Notes:

(Aaron Martin) m. Sept. 3, 1843, Mrs. Mary Hill Willis....(she) m. third an EDY. (White and Toole, p 47).

Dale Rubel shows she was born in Georgia or Alabama, as does Kay Parker McCary. McCary also shows that Mary was married for a third time, to John Edy on 6 Aug 1854, in Cherokee County, Texas.

Notes:

Veteran of the Confederate Army. He was 4th Cp. then elected Captain, Company F, 11th Texas Infantry. Enlisted 17 Feb 1862 at Hemphill, Texas.
