Henry Earl Reeves

Henry Earl Reeves, 95, of Newton died Nov. 4, 1999 at his residence.

Reeves was born Oct. 14, 1904, in Isla as a son of the late Henry B. and Lena Lee (Vickers) Reeves and was a former longtime resident of Sabine County before moving to Newton four years ago. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker.

Survivors: his wife of 74 years, Ruth Reeves of Newton; a son, Robert Earl Reeves of Newton; a daughter, Jimmie Ruth Prothro of Beaumont; five granchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 7, at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Jim Turner officiating. Interment followed at New Hope Cemetery near Milam.

Henry married Lena Lee Vickers about 1893 in Texas. Lena (daughter of Sam Houston Vickers and Margaret A. Adams) was born about 1877 in Texas; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He appears to have had a prior marriage, as the 1870 census shows children Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth were residing with her and Mary Ann, however they were all born prior to Joseph's 1867 marriage to Mary Ann Bennett. Tom L Bennett was still in the home at the time of the 1880 census.

In fact, in her annontated transcription of the Bennett Cemetery, north of Milam, Texas, Kay Parker McCary notes that his headstone is inscribed: " AT REST - Happy is he whose hope is in the Lord" and that he was the son of Richard Lawson Reeves & Allie Rene Bates ? 1st w Celia E. Strother buried in Strother Cemetery SCT, 2nd w Mary Ann Bennett, 3rd w Margaret Ann Harvey

White & Toole show that a Joseph Reeves married Mary Ann Bennett in Sabine County on 28 Feb 1867. Joseph appears to have had at least three children from a prior marriage, Thomas L, Mary, and Elizabeth.

Notes:

He was said to have married Lena CROWELL and Margaret ADAMS.

Sam married Margaret A. Adams on 11 Apr 1876 in Sabine County, Texas. Margaret was born on 1 Jul 1852 in Georgia; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

(Research):Joe Reeves shows that he was the son of John Hardy Reeves, and that he moved to Guinnet County, GA by 1818, and later to Texas. He lists his spouse as unknown. He shows Richard as being buried in Milam.

Richard married Alenna Rene "Allie" Bates. Alenna was born on 1 May 1794 in York County, South Carolina; died on 16 Feb 1887 in Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mary (daughter of Seth Harvey and Zelotus Margaret Ann Boyd) was born on 17 Dec 1821 in Louisiana; died on 8 Mar 1901 in Pine Hill, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Bennett Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas. Kay Parker McCary, in the transcription of the tombstone, writes that she was Born in Pitt Co., North Carolina, Moved to Texas Dec 1842 (Mary Jane Elizabeth Harvey - Daughter of Seth Harvey & Zelotus Margaret Ann Boyd - Married 1 Aug 1839 h Adam Jackson Bennett, Sr.) The 1880 census shows her state of birth as South Carolina, and early census records instead show her as being born in Louisiana.

Virgie Speights, in OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, in a column about Pearl Chambers Lord Greer, dated January 30, 1964, wrote that "Adam Bennett and Mary Jane Elizabeth Harvey, came with their slaves from Louisiana, just ahead of the sheriff. He was chasing them to take away their slaves in connection with some sort of lien connected with the estate of Mrs. Bennett's mother. They barely made it to Texas and safety in time to camp in the 'sand field' now known as "Bennet Field," just on the Texas side of the Sabine. The Louisiana authorities camped on the opposite side of the river before frustratedly returning home the next day. Then Adam staked his claim atop a nearby hill with gently sloping fields towards the river. The place is still called the "Bennett Place." There is a family graveyard nearby. The elder Bennetts had come to East Feliciana Parish from Alabama, and his father, a silversmith, had come from Germany." In a later article, this one profiling Abbie Della Bennett Travis, January 27, 1966, she added that the lien was due to "a matter of a few unpaid debts. The slaves were to be confiscated, so the Bennett's, their two children, and Zelotus Margaret Ann Boyd Harvey raced to the Sabine River and safety which they attained just before dark."

Notes:

Harrison Vickers, Jr., b Ga. ca 1812, moved to Fla. in 1817 when his father, Harrison Sr. bought land in the township of Tallahasse, Leon County. In 1834, Harrison Vickers Jr arrived in Texas. In 1837, he m. Sarah Ann Mason, (b) in Ala. (the dtr. of James and Elizabeth Mason). Harrision Vickers Jr., referred to as Harris Vickers on his headright papers, rec'd his land from the Sabine County Land Board in 1838, at Milam, Texas. He was a member of the Sexton Masonic Lodge at Sexton, and after it was moved to Milam. He was a farmer and the family home was near the Old Vickers Cemetery in the Isla Community. His descendants still live on the land. (White and Toole, p 38).

His tombstone is inscribed "Came to Texas From Georgia 1833"

Harrison married Sarah Ann Mason about 1837. Sarah (daughter of James Mason and Elizabeth ???) was born about 1821 in Alabama; died about 1891 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Old Vickers Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Might she instead be the daughter of John and Fannie Mason, listed on the 1835 Sabine District census? They also had a 17 year old daughter named Sarah.
