Casagranda found the following obituary in a Sabine Parish newspaper:

June 29, 1934-Former Negreet resident, Mrs. W. M Cook, 76, died Thursday in her Center, Texas home after a long illness. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Those that survive her include, husband, W. M. Cook, children: Mrs. W. S. Corbett, SR, Mrs. H. B Corbett, Mrs. R. R. Loving, Mrs. W. S. Beckram, Mrs. T. E. Cosby and Nahtan Cook, all of Center; J. M., Amarillo, Texas; C. M., Tulsa; Elmer, Fort Smith, Arkansas, Maby Cook, Lafayette, Georgia and 37 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Listed in 1861 as having six or more slaves. and is listed in many court papers regarding tutorship of members of his family or in land transactions. Robert Flannagan, age 18, was living in their household in Sabine Parish at the time of the 1850 census. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 86).

The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabine Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousant, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves." The owners of six or more in 1861 included Nathan and Mary Cook; James Cook.

Thought to be a son of Drury COOK and Druscilla COLLINGSWORTH, and a brother to Greenberry COOK, who married Nancy MORRIS, a sister his wife, Temperance MORRIS. Rocky Wright believes a third brother, Thomas, settled in Pike County, Mississippi.

James, Nathan, Polly, Louisa, Carey, Taylor, Matilda and William Cook"

A Joseph Montgomery was listed on the 1816 census in Adams County, Mississippi and on the 1818 Tax list for the same, later moving to the Neutral Strip-Negreet. He claimed lands in Sabine Parish in early 1820's cort in Natchitoches, La. However, he is listed as owning land as early as 1805 and being one of the settlers on the Rio Hondo lands. He was a private in the 12th and 13th consolidated Regiment, Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812. He was listed as owning 6 or more slaves in 1861. According to Lona Mae Duggan Gordon, Joseph lived in a double pen house. Usually constructed of Pine logs, there were one or more rooms in two separate enclosures under one roof. When first arriving in Sabine Parish, there were many bears that often would attack livestock, so Joseph brought the livestock into the cabin penned in a corner by the chimney for protection.

Joseph Turner Montgomery, Lavinia Montgomery, and Nancy Morris all have their names on a bronze plaque beside the door of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Negreet which states, "On the third Sunday in December, Anno Domino, 1826, Zion Hill Church was constituted by the following Presbytery to wit: William Cook and James Martin." The land the church was built on was donated by Joseph. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 82-83).

At the time of the 1870 census enumeration, Joseph T. Montgomery, age 105, was living with his son and daughter-in-law, A J and Laura Mongomery, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. He was shown as born ca 1865 in Mississippi.

In December, 2010, Scott Watkins (firedogger@gmail.com) emailed that "Green Berry's younger brother Alfred L, only had two daughters and no sons. The oldest daughter was Mary Ann, who married Amon P. Morris and her younger sister Drucilla Cordelia who married 1) White and 2) Partin. Both Mary Ann(s) are used back in forth between the family lines as well as William W. and Nancy. I started out to prove I was a descendant of Alfred L., only to find out I belong with Green Berry instead."

Kathy Casagranda thinks she might be from the Easley family.William Everheart believes she is from the Smith Family of Sabine County, Texas. Scott Watkins (firedogger@gmail.com) also believes she is from Smith Family. He states that her parents were John E. and Mary Smith, the parents of three sons and one daughter. He notes that Green Berry Watkins, John E Smith, and Alfred L. Watkins are all documented having sold each other deeds of land in Louisiana. Scott further points out at that the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas census, the widowed Mary Smith, age 77, was living with her son, William D. Smith and his family. William was also widowed.

The 1870 census shows her as being born in Tennessee versus North Carolina.

According to a Conveyance Record CBK G P. 523, Elizabeth Watkins states that she and her husband came to Sabine County, Texas in 1825. This is dated January 15, 1878. In 1840, Green B. Watkins is listed in the 1840 Natchitoches Parish census with 6 female children and 3 male children.

On page 87, Casagranda cites a record dated January 15, 1878 showing that "Mary A. Constable, Elizabeth, wife of John B. Carroll, Jane, wife of Nathan Cook, Matilda C. Flanakin and Susan Williams, all of Sabine Parish, Nancy Easley of Sabine County, Texas, and William W. Watkins of San Augustine County, Texas deeded Sabine Parish land to Daniel S. Watkins of Nacogdoches County, Texas, who is to take and support our sister, Amanda Watkins who is permanently diseased and helpless." All were heirs of G. B. and Elizabeth Watkins, deceased. (CBK J, P.258). This establishes who their children were.

In December, 2010, Scott Watkins (firedogger@gmail.com) emailed that "The statement "6 female children and 3 male children" is true. But on the 1840 census, Amanda hasn't been born yet. She was born after the 1840 census in 1841. By the next year, Green Berry and Elizabeth had 7 daughters and 3 sons. The missing daughter is "Mary A." Constable listed above."
