2. | Ezekiel "Zeke" Cobb was born about 1860 in Texas; and died. Notes:
At the time of the 1910 census, Ezekiel and Rebecca were living in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. He was shown as Married twice, and Rebecca was shown as married once, both for three years. Rebecca was shown as the mother of one living child, which would have been two year old Mary Cobb. Also living in the home were Ezekiel's children from his prior marriage, Ethel, age 15, Florida, age 14, and Ottis age 10. All the children were shown as born in Texas. Also living in the house were Louis R and Ida Cobb, age 38 and 32. There were shown as husband and wife, but their relationship to Ezekiel was not indicated.
Newton County Historical Committee, "Glimpses of Newton County History," (Nortex Press, Burnet, Texas, c. 1982), pp. 155-156, references an Ezekiel Cobb who served in the Confederacy at two separate times during the Civil War. A 1863 letter to his wife Amanda was transcribed in this book. Perhaps he was the father of the Ezekiel Cobb, born ca 1860, who married Rebecca Eaves. In another publication, "Newton County Nuggets" (Nortex Press, 1986). p. 142, Hastie Phelps Cole wrote that "I married Hulen Curtis Cole on 23 Dec 1933. He was the son of Lee and Ethel Cobb Cole who also lived in the Survey Community. Ethel was the daughter of Ezekiel COBB, one of hte frist settlers in Survey and who died in 1864 while serving in the Confederate Army after enlisting a second time." This same books contains an excerpt from Pauline Hines notebook, dated 30 May 1945. She noted that "Mr. Rudd says Mr. Zeke Cobb's father hauled the lumber for this house from Alexandria, Louisiana (Pine Lumber) in the year 1847. Lumber was sawed by the old sash saw run by waterwheel--lumber ws in the rough and it was hand dressed on the Survey. Negro slaves did the rought work--Mr. Cogburn was the leading carpenter in this community at that time---Zeke said it took from two weeks to a month to make the trip. Approximately average "speed" fo ox team was two miles per hour." (p. 407).
