Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Jonathan Henry Cooper, Jr. was born about 1846 in Hinds County, Mississippi (son of Jonathan Henry "J. H." Cooper and Obediance "Obediah" ???); and died.

    Notes:

May have died young. Not listed with the rest of his siblings on the 1860 Sabine County, Texas census. Said to be buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sabine County. However, he is not on Kay Parker McCary's annotated index of this cemetery. Perhaps he is an unmarked grave, or buried elsewhere.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Jonathan Henry "J. H." Cooper was born on 22 Aug 1818 in Mississippi (son of William Gill Cooper and Dempsey Donaho); died on 17 Feb 1897 in Yellowpine Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

FindAGrave shows that Jonathan and Obedience "moved to Pineland, Sabine County, Texas in 1854 from Mississippi. They built their first home, a log house, a short distance from Pineland, and later build a larger house north of the present town site on the east side of Highway 87. He went into the mercantile business and owned a store and a sawmill at Yellowpine, Texas. He was also a farmer and a breeder of livestock. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and he was said to have been one of the best in his community. He was elected Commissioner of the Sabine County Board of Supervisors, and as Commissioner, he ordered the County to buy in 1870 the first iron safe for the records of the County Clerk. Later the courthouse burned and all the records were destroyed."

    WAR RECORD: WAR OF 1812 - PRIVATE IN CAPT. WM. SPENCER'S CO., NIXON'S REGIMENT, MISS. MILTIA, MAY 16 - OCT. 7, 1814 AND IN CAPT HARMON M. RUNNEL'S CO., NIXON'S 13TH REGIMENT, JAN. 8 - FEB. 7, 1815.

About 1843 he moved to the Spring Ridge Community southeast of Raymond in Hinds County. He bought a tract of some 240 acres and lived there until he died. His wife died shortly after he had bought the plantation; but he lived for another six years, dying the latter part of January of 1849. He and his wife are buried together in the garden near their home.

Today their graves are unmarked for later owners felt the little family plot was morbid. They tore down the iron fence; plowed over the graves and took the headstone into a field and threw it in a gully. Earl B. Cooper found the stone and removed it to his lot in the Smith-Cooper cemetery in the Monterey Community of Rankin County, Miss. Now in graves unmarked and unknown, with their son, John Oliver Cooper, they rest in everlasting peace in the soil they loved and had chosen for a home.

A copy of his estate papers were said to have been filed in Hinds County, Mississippi on 10 Sept 1859.
