4. | Allen J. Woods was born about 1814 in Pike County, Mississippi; died on 31 Jul 1887 in Newton County, Texas; was buried in Woods Cemetery, Burkeville, Newton County, Texas. Notes:
The son of John Woods and brother of Seborn. They moved to Texas in 1840, and settled in Newton County. Allen helped to organize the Sardis Baptist Church in Burkville and became a deacon and clerk for the rest of his life. His name is on the Muster Roll in 1862, of Company H, 13th (Burnett's) Tex. Cav. At the time he was 58 years old. (White and Toole, p 32). They show his date of birth as 15 Feb 1804 in Mississippi, and date of death as 31 July 1887. Their date of birth does not fit with census records. Barbara S. Wright, on her website, posted: "He came to Texas in 1840 with his brother Seborn Woods. He had 12 children by first marriage. His name is on the muster roll in 1862 of Company B,13Yh (Burnett's) Texas Calvery Woods, were privates. There are more Woodses in Newton County ,than any other name. The McMahons had the largest connection, but they came from eight different children, while the Woods came from only two heads. The Woods family is not only one of the largest families in the county ,but they are also one of the most useful and respected. The Woodses are mostly Baptist. He is buried in the Woods Cemetery , near Burkeville, Newton Co. Tx. "
FindAGrave lists his full name as William Allen Woods, but it appears only Allen is engraved on his tombstone, which also shows he was "aged 73 Ys 6 Ms & 16 Ds."
