"William Martin and his son, Thomas Jefferson, received Bounty Land for their service in the Texas Revolution. William bought land in Sabine County from Lavina Popino (dau. of William Melton) in 1834. The Whitehead Cemetery is on this land." (White and Toole, p 88).
They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.

William and Harriett Martin moved their family from Mississippi to the Republic of Texas. (White and Toole, p 88). After William Martin's death--sometime after youngest son George was born ca 1838 and before the 1850 census---Harriett was said to have married second William Slaughter. At the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas, census, Harriett Slaughter, age 45, can be found with children Jane, Harriett and George B.
