    Helen graduated from Milligan High School in 1938. She taught rural school in Saline County for three years, and one year in Fillmore. She later worked at Stratton's Drug Store and the Halama Grocery. (Milligan, p 299).

    Helen J. Havel was born to Jaroslav and Anezka Hendrych on Oct. 16, 1921 on a farm northwest of Milligan and passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at her home at the age of 92.
    Helen attended public school at Milligan, graduating in 1938 with a Normal Training Certificate. She taught in rural schools for four years, one year with a special permit due to the shortage of teachers during WWII.
    Helen married Donald Havel on Dec, 31, 1945 in Wilber, making their home in Milligan. They had one daughter, Norene Kay born April 21, 1955. Don passed away April 27, 2000.
    The family moved to Exeter in 1958 and back to Milligan in 1986. Helen worked many different jobs in her lifetime in addition to teaching; in drug and grocery stores, at a produce station and as a nanny in Lincoln before and after marriage. While living in Exeter Helen worked at Barkmeier's part and full time for over 25 years. She concluded her "work life" at Heritage Crossings in Geneva from July 1993 to 2002 and retired at age 80.
    Helen was a charter member of the Friend Hospital Auxiliary and 8/40 Bleu Valle Salon #766. She held Unit, County and District 11 offices in the American Legion Auxiliary of which she was a member for 68 years and a member of the W.B.L.A. for over 75 years. She was received into full membership of The Methodist Church Dec. 20, 1953. While living in Exeter she was active in the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and First Thursday Club. After retirement she helped deliver meals for "Meals on Wheels" and was a member of the Milligan Senior Citizens.
    Helen enjoyed yard work, word search and crossword puzzles, watching TV and following the activities of Exeter-Milligan students and the Cornhuskers via newspaper, radio and TV. She was an excellent cook and her duck and liver dumpling soup Holiday meals were enjoyed by many throughout the years.
    She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Don; parents; sister, Agnes Halama; brothers, Jerry Hendrych and Adoph Hendrych; son-in-law, William Fitzgerald; brothers-and-sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
    Helen is survived by daughter, Norene and son-in-law Bill Kidder of Sargent and two sisters-in-laws, Sister Frances Ann Havel of Grand Island and Virgie (Bill) Smith of Lincoln; nephews, nieces, step grandchildren, cousins, many friends and good neighbors.
    Private family inurnment at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell will take place later this summer. Memorials are directed to the family for later designation.
