Hemphill High School's graduating class of 1937 held a reunion Saturday, April 27. Attending were, from left: Lloyd Salts, Cecil Tucker Hogan, Gweneth Alford Tinsley, Elrod Dent, Dorothy Collier Eddings (sic), Jack Maund and Mabel Maund Sherman.

Dorothy B. Collier Eddins, 87, of Bronson, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at her residence.

Mrs. Eddins was born April 16, 1920, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, as a daughter of the late George Augustus and Gladys Mavor Winn Collier. She had lived in Sabine County for the past few years.

Survivors: children, Dorothy Marie Whiteman and Carolyn Faye Smith, both of Bronson, Nancy Drew, of Pineland, and Bobbie Eddins of Center; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, L.C. Eddins.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Watson and Sons Funeral Home chapel in Center with Bro. Royce Robb officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Services were under the direction of Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center.

He was born in Louisiana, the son of William Theodore and Louiza Dexter West Collier. He married Gladys Mavor Winn on July 29, 1919.

He served as a naval fireman in World War I on the patrol boat Alcedo, the first American vessel sunk during the war.

He was on watch in the engine room under instructions as machinist mate. When the Alcedo, patroling off the coast of France, was torpedoed by a German submarine, he stopped the main engine and then raised the safety valve on the main engine by the hand gear, despite the fact that he was, by that time, standing in knee-deep water. The ship sank four minutes after being struck and George ended up in the water for 18 hours before he was rescued. He contracted tuburculosis, which ultimately lead to his death on November 8, 1936.

George married Gladys Mavor Winn on 29 Jul 1919 in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas. Gladys Mavor Winn Collier was born December 11, 1897 in Grange Hall Community in Marshall, Texas to Albert Mavor Winn and Annie Asia Russell Winn. She was the youngest of Annie's 11 children. She attended Marshall Public Schools.

Gladys was a Methodist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary. She was a homemaker, a former employee of the telephone company and the Marshall Basket Company. She operated the Marshall Canteen at the high school for many years.

She married George Augustus Collier, Sr. on July 29, 1919 in Marshall. They soon had three children: Dorothy Byrle, Reba "Nell" and George Augustus "Jake", Jr.

She was prededed in death by her husband in 1936 and by her daughter Nell in 1986. She died April 15, 1993 following a long illness. Services were held at Travis Street Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home. Reverand Glenn Lowrimore and Reverend Jerry Ross officiated. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

William married Louisa Dexter West on 11 Dec 1877 in Sabine County, Texas. Louisa (daughter of Nathaniel Plympton West, M. D. and Amanda Melvina Evans) was born on 27 Jul 1857 in Burkeville, Newton County, Texas; died on 4 Apr 1930 in Many Cemetery, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; was buried in Many Cemetery, Sabine Parish, Louisiana. 2 Apr 1935 - Mrs. W. T. Collier, widow of the late W. T. Collier, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. O. Daily, April 4, after several months illness, being confined to her bed about two weeks. She was 76 years, nine months and eight days of age.

Mrs. Collier was Miss Lula West of Milam, Texas, before her marriage to W. T. Collier, later moving to Many, where they made their home and reared a very large family, all of whom survive with the exception of one child that died in infancy. She affiliated herself with the Methodist church soon after moving to Many and has been a very devoted Christian mother, training her children in
the principles of right living and also being the very best of neighbors, exemplifying the saying " Let me live by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

The surviving children: W. P. Collier, Marshall, Texas; W. T. Collier, Mooringsport, La.; G. A. Collier, Hemphill, Texas; Mrs. E. O. Daily, Many, La.; Mrs. C. W. Johnson, Robeline, La.; and T. J. Collier, Oklahoma, all of whom were present except T. J. Collier.

The active pallbearers were Boyd Harris, Elden Dees, Edd Curtis, Henry Lee Hester, Jimmie Hays and Edwin Fraser.

Interment was made in the Many cemetery.

They are shown on the 1900 census as having 7 children, six still living at that time. The seventh child may have been a daughter names Nina/Nina Pearl, born ca 1879-1880. Not verified.

Virgie Speights wrote, in a birthday sketch of granddaughter Daisy Florence Harris Wilson, that "George Washington and Sarah Elizabeth Tatom Collier came from Mississippi in a covered wagon and settled in Milam where they owned a sawmill, gristmill, store and hundreds of acres of land. Collier also was a political and civic leader, serving as tax collector among other offices." (Speights, Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas, p. 81).
