Alfred Cuthbert Sims and Rachell Laura Arabella Segrest) was born on 16 Oct 1880 in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas; died on 12 Jan 1958 in Jasper, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Jasper County, Texas. Kenneth Morgan reported that his grandfather, Thomas Marion Morgan, loved his "Uncle Mal" and spent much time in his household when he was growing up. He said Mal was a sleepwalker, and the boys tried to watch out for him at night to prevent him from getting hurt. Early one morning, Mal asked the boys to go with him to their field across the creek to bring a turning plow back to the garden. When they arrived at the field the plow was missing, and they began to study tracks closely in the plowed ground. They found Mal's barefoot tracks where he had picked up the plow and walked across the creek on a log. Arriving back at the garden near the house they found the plow. Mal remembered nothing about the trip in the moonlight.

In A.C. Sims' memoirs of the Civil War, he tells that he joined up with General Hood's Texas Regiment in Georgia after the death of this twin brother, Hub in Arkansas. His elder brother, Tom, was an officer in the Confederate Army. A.C. suffered much illness during the period he was in Georgia. Upon the end of the fighting, he returned home to East Texas where he was a teacher and later a Baptist Minister.

He first married Rachell Segrest, and on the 1870 Tyler County census, they were living in the home of Rachell's father, Jacob Segrist. About 3 months after the birth of Apless Arabella, Rachell died, leaving A.C. with 5 children under the age of 10. He later married Fannie Allen, and they had 5 more children.

His last will and testament was very simple:

State of Texas Jasper, Jasper County 21 January 1903

To all whom it may concern: Know by these prescence that it is my will that my beloved wife F.A. Sims after my decease shall retain full possession of all that is called mine as a means of support until her death provided, however, she remains single. In the event that she should marry again or die, all properties in anywise belonging to me be equally divided between my ten children. Written with mine own hand this 21 day of January A.D. 1903.

Alfred married Rachell Laura Arabella Segrest on 8 Dec 1869 in Tyler County, Texas. Rachell (daughter of Jacob Segrest, Jr. and Martha L. Day) was born about 1851 in Alabama; died between 1880 and 1881. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John was said to have died in South Carolina before his family moved to Georgia. However, since he was married in Georgia he probably actually died after the move to Georgia, but before the family moved on to Texas and Florida.It appears that he did die prior to the 1840, because his widow, Hannah Morgan is listed as the head of household in the "1840 Decatur County Georgia Census Index " (Frances T. Ingmire, Mountain Press).

John's five children, along with a 28 year old "Mrs. Morgan," are listed in the 1850 Decatur County, GA census in household #521. They live nearby to the McLemores, Boyetts, Morgans, and Kellys. It appears that John may have remarried, as his apparent widow, age 28, was too young to be the mother of any but the very youngest of his five children, who ranged in age from 14 to 23. This potential second wife would have been born circa 1822.

The online Decatur County, Georgia census for 1850 lists the family as follows:

John married Hannah Kelley on 1 Mar 1827 in Decatur County, Georgia. Hannah (daughter of Malachi Kelley and Sarah Singletary) was born before 1810 in South Carolina; died after 1840. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From the marriage records, and from the estate settlement of her father, Malachi Kelley, it appears that John Morgan was married to Hannah Kelley, and that she was the mother of his children. Hannah Morgan is listed as living next door to Malachi Kelly in Decatur County, Georgia at the time of the 1840 federal census.

Her household was composed of the following members:

It appears from the 1850 Decatur County, Georgia census, that Hannah may have also died before 1850, as her children are living with a 28 year old "Mrs. Morgan." Unless her age is in error, however, the woman listed on the census appears to be too young to be the mother of the children.

The Estate of Malichi Kelley (Hannah's father) was probated in 1857, and Hannah was not an heir. However, two of her children Malichi Morgan and Kizzie Morgan were heirs. It would therefore appear that Hannah Kelley Morgan died sometime before 1857. There was, however, a Hannah Morgan who was granted a land patent for 252 acres of land in Jasper County, Texas on October 23, 1858 (Patent #204. Vl 18, File No 156). Could this possibly be a different Hannah Morgan?

He was said to be the son of Mann SIMS and Margaret McGRUDER. His first wife was an ANN, and they were said to be the parents of John, Frances Evelyn, Augustus "Gus", Martha and one other female.

John married Apoles Sanderson Foster. Apoles was born on 8 May 1812 in Wilkes County, Georgia; died on 18 Feb 1877 in Tyler County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
