      THE McDANIEL FIVE (Photo submitted)

How unique is it to see siblings, five of them, all in their 80s and all still living and doing well except for the things that getting older brings to all of us? I would say it is very seldom heard of and when we do hear and see it, we need to pause and celebrate! Above are all five children of Nolan Ernest, sr. (Mac) and Ella Lee McDaniel. Seated, from left: Wendell, 89, (who will be 90 Sept. 20) of Yellowpine, Clement, 88 of Hemphill and Ernest, 85, of Yellowpine; standing: Evelyn (Easley), 80, of San Juan Capistrano, CA, and Zuda (Tinsley), 82, or Hemphill. They were all born in Sabine County and raised in the old community of Mason Town, now known as Six Mile. They were raised when times were hard ans each had to pull their own weight, when walking was something they had to do to get where they wanted to go and not for exercise. Going barefooted was something they did, not for fun, but out of necessity. Getting to school was a chore. During grade school years they walked three miles to attend school in Six Mile and as high school years approached, some stayed with friends in Hemphill and Yellowpine so they could attend school. Even with all the marks set against them, the five grew up to be fine upstanding citizens of the communities they chose as grown men and women to start and raise their families. So much could be said about each of these five people (I am the niece of Wendell, but claim them all as my aunts and uncles) and wish for each, all the blessings that only God can bestow on them in the years he chooses to give them.
