      Obituary

Doris Stewart Waits, 88, died at 5:45 p.m. on November 25, 2015 at Briarcliff Health Center in Tyler, Texas. She was born on March 18, 1927 in Milam, Texas, Sabine County, to the late Thomas Grady Stewart and Abbie Bragg Stewart. She graduated from Hemphill High School in 1944, and she married Fredrick Nelson Waits on January 23, 1947. They were married for 59 years, until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Waits settled in Tyler, Texas, where Mr. Waits, known as the "Singer Sewing Machine Man," worked for over 50 years. Mrs. Waits completed courses to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked as a nurse for over 20 years, primarily working with dialysis patients in Tyler, Texas.

Mrs. Waits was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Taking care of her family and friends was the joy of her life, but she also loved to be active. Her many hobbies included photography, gardening, genealogy, sewing, quilting, painting, and bird watching. She loved to travel and visited many places around the world such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Morocco, Israel, and Italy. Mrs. Waits was a professional artist in Tyler, as well as a long-time member of the Tyler Art League. She won awards for her art, often painting landscapes of the Texas Hill Country. Mrs. Waits became a Master Gardner later in life and was an active member of the Smith County Master Gardeners Association. Above all else, Mrs. Waits was a devoted Christian, sharing the love of Christ not only by what she said but how she lived. She was an active member of Southern Oaks Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. Mrs. Waits was an exceedingly kind, funny, and generous person. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her son, David Russell Waits and wife Nancy of Tyler, and granddaughter Bethany Waits of Tyler, as well as a multitude of other family members and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses, aids, and staff at Briarcliff Health Center.

Mrs. Waits was preceded in death by her son, Ralph Arlen Waits and her husband, Fredrick Nelson Waits.
