- Email from Ron Hanks (ronhanks@earthlink.net) on August 13, 2006:
Sorry for the delay, I have been finding more details on this family. Of the children of James Stewart Hanks, this has been probably the most challenging one to sort out. James W Hanks and Marium Hughes married 26 Mar 1854 in Richland County, Illinois. They are in Gibson Co., IN for the 1860 census with son William, age 4 and son Joel A. age 8/12. I have never found this family in the 1870 census. This created a big problem because James W died 10 Aug 1870 and Marium died 27 Feb 1872. The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Here is the list of children with notes about what I have been able to find.
1) William M Hanks b. Apr1855 d.???? aft.1900
1860 census w/ parents age 4
1870 census not found
18 Feb 1879 married Louisa Woods in Gibson Co, IN (not sure what happened w/Louisa but no indication of any children.)
1880 census Gibson County, William and Louisa and Wesley P Hanks, brother age 10
19 Aug 1886 married Ellen Kendle in Gibson Co,IN (it appears she was previously married to Hiram Kendle. I have not found her maiden name)
1900 census - William was in White county, IL listed as servant, marital status - divorced (He is in the previous household to J S Hanks)
Note Ellen Kendle Hanks was living with her son Robert Kendle in Gibson Co. Marital status - divorced. Shows she had 4 children - 2 living. I have found no evidence that any of those children were from William
Other notes - from church records of Columbia Baptist Church, Gibson, Co.,IN William Hanks joined the Columbia Baptist Church by baptism on 7 May 1876. He was excluded 31 Mar 1883. The church minutes state "He did not think himself worthy to live in the church." William Hanks joined by relation on 2 May 1888. He was dismissed on account of disorder on 2 Jan 1892.
