    Notes
    • "One day [John McLemore]...was with his Uncle Maclin Bass McLemore in Rogersville. Maclin was a pilot on the Shoals. The Shoals, being a treacherous body of water and rapids, took a skilled person to navigate. That fateful day John and Maclin were captured by the army. Thinking John was too young (he was 15); he was told to go home and tell his aunt what had happened to her husband. Legend has it that Maclin was never heard from again." (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).

He built a dogtrot house with one side log and the other frame, surrounded by large trees and log dependencies in an ideal rural setting. When Maclin McLemore returned from the ardous task of piloting boats over the treacherouse Tennessee River Shoals, he liked to prop his feet up in comfort. He found that comfortable place in the story-and-a-half dogtrot house which he built around the time of his marriage in 1843. (The Lure and Lore of Limestone County, p. 147)

It is noted that Nancy and her children were ALSO enumerated on the Lauderdale County census dated 18 July 1870. Perhaps they lived on/near the border and were counted twice? Or lived part time in both locations? For whatever reason, here is the second listing. Note the slight difference in the children's ages, PLUS an additional child (Ulisses, female?, age 4) being shown:
