  Notes	The North Carolina Death record of her son shows her as Emma Carter. Robert McLemore Butler instead has her listed as Emily D. Carter. Said to be one of ten children born to Carlton C. CARTER and Julia Ann PORTER of Cumberland County, North Carolina. "My great-great grandfather was Carlton C Carter. (variations of his name are Calton, Cotton and, on his death certificate, he is listed as Calvin!)He was born April 1848 in Cumberland County, NC. He died after 1929. He is listed in the census records as being a farmer and when first married he worked as a turpentine hand. He married Julia Ann Porter, daughter of James Porter and Barbara Ann McMillan, on 27 October 1869. Julia Ann was born May 1853 and died 18 May 1922.
