McLemore was born to wealth, but his father lost the family fortune in the stock market crash of 1929 and became a turkey farmer. His mother was committed to a mental hospital shortly thereafter, and he never saw her again, as children were not allowed to visit. As a young man McLamore worked as a restaurant manager and then owner, and in 1954 he became Dave Edgerton's business partner in the first Burger King, originally called Insta Burger King. Three years later McLamore proposed adding a "Whopper" to the menu, basing the recipe on a terrific burger he bought from a competitor's burger stand. Edgerton and McLemore sold the company to Pillsbury in 1967, with McLemore remaining as President.
