Could not find a record in the Texas Birth Index for Earl P. Smith, but did locate one for a Katherine Smith, as follows. Perhaps Earl was married twice? However, this may be for a different Katherine Smith, as the obituary of Ruby Lout Smith also shows her as the mother of Katherine.

Name: Katherine Ann Smith Date of Birth: 7 Dec 1933 Gender: Female Birth County: Shelby Father's Name: Earl H Smith Mother's Name: Katherine Evel Peirce Roll Number: 1933_0007

Additionally, a Texas Birth record was located for Kenneth Earl Lout, born 13 Mar 1957 in Angelina, to Ruby Jackson Lout, with no father listed.
