    The children of William and Mary Strickland Carter can be proven, in part, by gifts that were made to them by their family. The below listed DEED OF GIFT was made by Solomon Strickland (son of Solomon and Amy Strickland) to his sisters children, ath the approximate time of his departure from the Jackson-Elbert County area that later became Madison County, GA. It was contributed to the STRICKLAND SCENE newsletter (Vol 4, No 4, Fourth Quarter 1983) by Lily Carter Thurman:

    Know all men by these presents that I SOLOMON STRICKLAND for & in consideration of the Natural love & affection which I have & bear toward my two nephews REDMON CARTER & WILLIAM CARTER, & my two Nieces UNITY & BETSY CARTER, sons & daughters of WILLIAM & MARY CARTER, have given and granted unto the said REDMON, WILLIAM, UNITY & BETSY the following property to-wit: three Cows & yearlings, five feather beds & furniture, bedsteads & Cover, eleven head of hogs, one Cuppoard, twelve pewter plates, two decanters, one Coffee mill, one earthern dish, two tables, seven chairs, two Cotton Wheels, one pot, one Oven, all which property is now in the possession of their Mother, MARY CARTER, which said property I the said SOLOMON STRICKLAND do warrant & forever defend from the Claim of any person or persons unto them the said REDMON, WILLIAM, UNITY & BETSY, they & their heirs and assigns forever, In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand & Seal this third day of January 1807.

    (Editor's Note: On Jan 12, 1805, Solomon & Ezekiel Strickland (brothers) witnessed the Will of Robert Beavers whose son was the above REUBEN BEAVERS. Solomon & Ezekiel were sons of Solomon and Amy Pace Strickland.)



    Ms. Carter Thurman also contributed the following deed to the STRICKLAND SCENE newsletter (Vol 7, No 4, Fourth Quarter 1986). This deed was recorded some 20 years later related to a gift by Mary herself to her oldest grandchild:

    To all whom may see these presents Greetings. I Mary (Strickland) Carter in and for the love and Esteem which I have for my Grandchild Nancy Stricklin {The eldest daughter of Noah Strickland and Mary Carter Strickland born in 1826} I do hereby give and bequethe the following property and its increase to the said Nancy Stricklin five head of cattle consisting of two cows and calves and one heefer 1 feather bed and Stead and furniture one mare. The aforesaid property I do declare by the presents that after my death to be in the rights and title of the said Nancy Stricklin her hairs and assigns forever in testimony of this being my last will and Testament I have hereunto set my name and affixed my seal this 13th day of June in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Six and of the Independance of the United States of America the Forty ninth and Fiftyth and in the presents of these witnesses. her

    Notes:

    IGI Records show that Una Carter married Amaziah Vardeman in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana on 12 December 1815. The couple moved north to Mississippi sometime after their marriage, as all three of their daughters were born here.

    A woman named "Uny Massy" can be found in Pike County, Mississippi in 1840 (Microfilm #704). Ronald Vern Jackson's index to this census references page 152. It appears that the reference should have been to pg 297, which is what is actually stamped at the top of the microfilm as a guide. The census listing indicates this was a household made up entirely of females. There was one female between the ages of 10-15, two between ages 15 and 20, one between 20 and 30, and one between 40 and 50. Living with them as well was a female slave, who was somewhere between 26 and 56 years of age. It appears that Una might have actually had four daughters, and not just the three currently listed. Una's oldest known daughter, Polly, became 20 years old in 1840. Her youngest known daughter, Jemimah, reached age 15 the same year. This means that either of them might have been classified into two age categories. Therefore gauging the age of a fourth daughter is especially difficult. She could have been born prior to Polly, or after Jemimah. She might even have been a daughter by Una's second husband.

    At the time of the 1850 Sabine Parish Louisiana, Una was living alone in dwelling #304, between her daughters Jemimah Amazia Vardeman White and Ann Vardeman White. She is listed in the transcription of the Sabine Parish census prepared by Kathy Casagranda as Unas Massa age 57, M (sic), born in Louisiana.

    On the 1860 Sabine County Census, she is living with her daughter Jimimah, and son in law John Reagan White (Household 118). This is next door to Henry Strickland White and his wife Mary Etta Vardeman. On that transcription, she is shown as Una Massa, age 66, F, born North Carolina.

    Una married Amaziah Vardeman on 12 Dec 1815 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Amaziah (son of William Vardeman and Ann ???) was born in 1790 in Tennessee; died between 1826 and 1849 in Mississippi. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Bradford Carter, his son Ben, and grandson, John Bradford owned and operated Carter's Ferry for many years. (White and Toole, p 41).

    Leatha Betts, a descendant of his eldest daugther, Sarah Elizabeth, show that Bradford was married five times in total, and also indicates that he had three children with Frances Procell, though they were never married. Frances Procell was listed as a housekeeper, age 22, in his home at the time of the 1870 census. She was listed as part of the household in Toole & Speight's 1880 transcription however. Why was she missing from the earlier transcriptions? Perhaps the Joseph, age 12, who was listed only in 1860 actually should have been shown as Sophie. And in 1870, perhaps she was shown as Josephin

    A Mary Wallice (sic) was enrolled in the District 6 School in Sabine County in 1854.

    At the time of the 1910 census, Josephine was shown as being the mother of 11 children, 10 still living. It therefore appears she was not the mother of three children living with she and Elias at the time of the 1780 census, John (b. 1865) and Sydney Ann (b. 1867) and Felix J. (b. 1868).

    At the time of the 1920 Federal census she was living with her youngest daugher and son-in-law, Minnie and Elmer Butler, in San Augustine County.

    Her headstone reads: "Come ye blessed - She lived and died a Christian - Beloved - How we miss you."

    In memory of Mrs. Elias Clark, who went away, leaving us for a better world on October 24th 1930. She was born Feb. 23rd 1851. She was married to Elias Clark in 1870. To this union was born eleven children. They are: C.B. Clark, L.T. Clark, J.E. Clark, T.F. Clark, W.E. Clark, Mrs. Agnes Cole, Mrs. Minnie Butler, all of whom are still living. Bruce Clark, Mrs. Anna McLemore, Mrs. Mattie Chandler and Mrs. Ara Anderson, who preceded her in death. There were also three step-children: John Clark, who died in early life, Mrs. J.W. Craig, who is also dead, and Felix Clark, who still survives. She left eighty grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
    She professed faith in Christ in early life and joined the missionary Baptist Church. She was a charter member the the Antioch Church, and was a faithful and devout Christian.
    Dear Mother was kind and true, meeting everyone with a smile. She always bore her trials with patience. It was so hard to give her up, but God's will must be done, not ours. We know it was a joyful hour for her when she heard the Dear Savior saying: "Enter Thou into the joy of the Lord. You have been faithful over a few things and I will make thee ruler over many things."
    What more can be said? We know that a life like this can mean only a self sacrifice and loving service with heart and hands. Such a life she performed, not one day but every day, striving to help everyone she could.
    Funeral service was held by Eld. E.M. Gentry at Antioch Church and her body was laid to rest in Antioch Cemetery to await the resurrection.

    Note - This obituary was written in October of 1930 in memory of Mary Josephine Wallace Clark. Antioch Church is the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Sabine County, Texas. The cemetery is Gravel Hill Cemetery adjacent to the church property. A copy of the following poem was written below the obituary.

    To that beautiful land we call heaven,
    The place where we all want to be
    Is a road that leads onward and upward,
    And a lone weary traveler we see.

    According to her obituary, Ruth White McLemore "slipped in her home in Hemphill, and fractured her left thigh on June 2nd. She was carried to . . . hospital in Jasper (and then) transferred here to the home of her son, Mr. V.E. McLemore of San Augustine, where she passed away on June 11, 1939. She was born December 27, 1859 at Hemphill. She joined the Baptist church when a young girl and was a faithful Christian worker all of her life. She married to J.F. McLemore on December 13, 1883 and was the mother of eight children, four boys and four girls. Six children survive: namely V. E. McLemore, San Augustine; Earnest and Ira McLemore, Miss Mellie McLemore, and Mrs. Herman Commack of Gravel Hill, and Mrs. Mermon Speights of Hemphill. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to relatives, local people attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Read, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Jacks, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Clark, Mr and Mrs W.F. Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burkhalter, Mrs. Rosalie Polly, W.L. Polly, Mr. and Mrs. Rob Horn, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Mitchell, Mrs. E.M. Boyett, Theo Boyett and others."

    Melinda McLemore Strong has a maroon and white quilt made by Ruth circa 1880. At Ruth's death, the quilt was passed on to her daughter Millie. Millie added a calico border to the quilt edges which had apparently frayed. At Millie's death, the quilt was passed to her older brother, Vessie McLemore. After Vessie and Nina died, Evon McLemore Tisdale used the quilt. She later gave it to her niece, Melinda McLemore Strong.

    Could Cade be a nickname for Cajabeth? Jack White emailed, in August, 2013, that he is descended from Cajabeth White, who was living in Bute Co, NC with his brother, William, as early as 1766. He had two sons, John and Robert. John White inherited land from a man named John Seagrove, whose will names John White as his nephew. It seems likely that Cajabeth's wife, Frances, was a Seagrove, but this is not proven.

    The 1771 tax list for Bute Co shows that Young McLemore, who is part of your family tree, had an overseer named John Seagrove, who appears on a number of documents with members of the McLemore family before they migrated out of Bute (later Warren) Co. I have been trying for a couple of years to piece together precisely how the Seagrove, McLemore and White families may have interacted with one another, but the Seagrove family history is as complicated as that of the Whites.

    The thing that interests me about your website is that Cajabeth White was frequently referred to in court documents as Cade, and I see in your website that two sons of Edward White (b. 1781 in Mecklenburg Co, VA) each had sons they named Cade.

    This cemetery is located north of Hwy 6 just east of the Pendleton Bridge. From the bridge go about 1 mile to Merritt Mtn. Road. Turn north and follow the road to the end. From this point you will have to climb the hill. The cemetery is about 200 yds. west of where the fire tower used to stand.

    Most of these graves were marked with wooden plaques which have since faded away, but at the time transcribed were still readable. Lily Thurman knew where they were buried.

    "(Born February 29, 1876) on the banks of the Sabine River in old Sabinetown, where they ran a ferry. It was in hard times of reconstruction days, with lawlessness rampant, and the Stricklands early learned to fight their way through hard times and rough days...When Dee was about 7 years old, his father had trouble with a drunk who pulled him out of bed and started fighting. Following this trouble, John moved his family to Orange. Dee Strickland moved back to Sabine County and married Luvenia Walker. Two of their three children survive: Mrs. Thelma Strickland Lakey of California and Mrs. L.C. Crouch of Houston. The Stricklands moved around to sawmilling, and lived in Rusk when Mrs. Strickland died. Dee came back to Pineland and worked for a month at the mill there; became restless and spent three years in Louisiana before returning to Sabine County, where he married Miss Zilpha Lott. Dee farmed and worked for Temple Lumber Company until his retirement a few years ago. He is the father of ten children by his second marriage. They are Mrs. Gladys Stevens of Houston, J.B. Strickland who is deceased, Mrs. Miriam Amason of Pineland, Robert Strickland of Wyoming, Herbert Strickland of Kirbyville, J.D. Strickland whereabouts unknown at present, A.W.     From OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS "In 1906 he was married to Mrs. Essie Strickland O'Riley, a widow with three children. To this union was born five sons. His wife was a good Christian woman and the children were brought up in the church, but he could not feel the conviction of saving grace until his mother died. His wife rejoiced but when he felt the call to preach, about 2 am one morning, and told his wife about it when she was making breakfast, he opened his Bible and began preaching.. she burned the meat and bread. Strickland has been preaching for years up and down the East Texas area has an unshakeable faith and believes in faith healing, citing as examples his recovery from TB and his wife's from cancer, after the doctors had given up on them....The Strickland's are a handsome, dignified couple, and thoroughly enjoy telling of the early trials of his ministry and the struggle to rear their 8 children on a minister's intermittent stipend. "The Lord always provided!" was Brother Bobs's prompt answer to any problem. "I recall once when I was preaching in Nacogdoches, the larder was completely empty and Essie was fretting something awful. I prayed and sure enough, an old colored man delivered a load of groceries." Born near Bronson, Rev. and Mrs. Strickland were second cousins. They attended the one room, three month session schools. "I spent two sessions in the Blue Back Speller before I graduated to a reader, slate, and pencil" recalls Strickland. A lady by the name of Evans was their first teacher, with Miss Jennie Oliphint a later teacher. Later schooling was at Newton with Professor Jim Sharpe as teacher; then there was a year each at Burkville, Jasper, Hemphill, and Timpson. Strickland grew up in a religious home with revival meetings and grove prayer meetings a regular part of his childhood. He worked for Jim Toole at Hemphill in his store, then went to Bronson when his father opened a grocery store and cafe. There he got in with the wrong crowd and lived a wicked life for several years.... The oldest Strickland son died in 1962."
