Notes:

Bonnie-Margaret Jacobs writes that he was called Hans Jerg, and that he migrated to Pl?derhausen Parish, about 1700...many miles to the east, and a bit to the south, of Aalen. In earlier times the town had been called Pliederhausen and then Bliederhausen. It is split down the middle by the Rems River and the surrounding hills are given to vineyards and orchards, the town communally owning as well a large stand of beechwood.

BonnieMargaret indicated Pl?derhausen was a small town on the main road from Stuttgart to Nurnberg. On the map, Pl?derhausen appears nearly equidistant between Aalen and Stuttgart, slightly northeast of Lorch.

BonnieMargaret further noted, on page 50 of her unpublished 1981 manuscript, that on the record of the marriage of Hans Jerg Benkelmann/Binkelmann to Margaretha M?ller, he is identified as a "wannanmacher and citizen and subject of the Earl of Wollwarth-Laubach." She shows that Pl?derhausen parish records show him as a son of "Albrect Benkelmann, Waiblingen und Catharina, geb. Roter." Bonnie wrote that the occupation of wannanmacher is uncertain in our modern times, but translates loosely as "pool maker," and likely refers to some sort of copper tub, perhaps for bathing, or for water basins used in the public works of the town.

Hans Jerg died in Pl?derhausen on May 2, 1775 "after a long sick-bed, aged 87 years and 9 days, son of Allbrect Benckelmann, subject of the Earl of Wollwarth-Laubach and parish-curatot in Waiblingen in the parish of Fachsenfeld." Usually this is the extent of the record of death entered by the pastors, but the pastor of Pl?derhausen added the following additional note "the oldest man in the village, he had been a valuable citizen of much usefulness to the community and was noted for his great wisdom." (Jacobs, p. 51).

In the chapter of her manuscript titled "The Migration to Pluderhausen," BonnieMargaret statesd that the familienregister entry for Hans Jerg Binckelmann (Johann Georg) was abstracted from the actual parish records in Pl?derhausen by Friedrich Wollmershauser, professional genealogist of Stuttgart.

In a June 9, 1985 letter to Arthur Benkelman of Missouri, Bonnie-Margaret Benkelman Jacobs speculates that "Johann George (Hans Jerg) the first born [and namesake] son of our ancestor Johann Georg (Hans Jerg)....moved to Hohenstauffen and married and raised his family there...." noting that she suspects he may be the ancestor of Arthur's family, but that she had not traced his descendants."

She added that Arthur's great-grandfather, who emigrated from Entringen, W?rttemberg was Otto Benkelman (born 6 Oct 1870), the son of Franz Anton Benkelman born in Fruedenstadt and his second wife, Pauline Schlayer born in Rottenburg. Franz Anton Benkelman was the son of Franz Joseph Benkelman and Franziska Strohmeier. Bonnie said she was able to locate the actual parish record for Otto's family in the Stuttgart Archive. Bonnie had not yet [in 1981], found a link back from Otto to the Benkelmann family of Faschenfeld, Pl?derhausen, and B?rtlingen.

BonnieMargaret Jacobs writes that Jacob followed his father and grandfather into the trade of wannanmacher. She added that almost certainly the men of Pl?derhausen were farmers in addition to their trades, because trade alone was not large enough to support a man without land to grow his own food. BonnieMargaret noted that cabbage, millet, poppy, beets, clover and flax were all raised in the area (p. 53). BonnieMargaret also stated that the death record of Jacob showed his cause of death at the young age of 36 was attributable to 'delirium-fever.'

BonnieMargaret found records of Johann Jacob Benkelmann's death inventory in Pl?derhausen records. She explained that "upon death, every item belonging to the married couple was inventoried and the guilded artisans placed a monetary value on each thing owned by the parents. The property and inheritance of the wife would be deducted from the estate and the remainder would be divided equaily between the widow and living children. Since the widow would immediately receive possession of her own clothing, only the clothing of the deceased would be itemized"

Jacob's death inventory included the following property:

"one half of a two floor house and an additional building and yard under one roof, down in the lower part of the village besides Friedrich Bose and Christoph Gries", following the house there is a list of vineyards, meadows and garden. No cash is listed, but the couple owned one prayer book, one hand Bible and one hymnal. Furniture and household items consisted of: a bed, clothes wardrobe, hat box, milk box, trunks, child's bed, old trunk, hardwood table, two chairs, one footstool, bells and tools (household), garden tools, axe, field fork, scythe, one container of seed, foodstuffs (potatoes, etc), craftsman's tools, one pistol. His clothing consisted of one blue jacket, one waist cloth, one black pair leather pants, one pair deer leather pants, one hat, one blue chest cloth, one white cloth vest or jacket, one pair shoes. The inventory also itemized every kitchen tool, and the longest category in his inventory were the household linens, five pages in total of linens alone. The total inheritable property was valued at 1312 florins and 30 kreutze, and after re-listing all the property, the inventory specified who got what. It was signed by Eva and her curator, and by the curator of the children's interest. (p. 64).
