J.H. Striffler Passed Away-
Long Prominent in the Community as Auctioneer and Business Man-
Served Cass City and Elkland Township as Office for Many Years
Cass City lost a prominent citizen, one who has been long connected with the business and political affairs of the community, in the death of Jacob H. Striffler, who passed away at his home on East Main street Sunday evening, May 31. Mr. Striffler, in his 45 years of residence here, has been unusually active as a business man and through his tireless energy has done much to bring the Cass City community to the front in a business way.
Mr. Striffler was born in Lancaster, N.Y. on Jan. 6, 1851. On January 22, 1880, at Lancaster, he was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Helwig and the following March they came to Cass City, settling on the Striffler homestead just east of the corporation line of the village.
Mr. Striffer established a farm implement business here in 1882 which he conducted for a period of 19 years. At the age of 19 years, when still a resident of Lancaster, he commenced his activities as an auctioneer, and shortly after coming here, he entered in earnest into his career in this profession which he followed for about 35 years in this community. Many a sale had "Jake" Striffler in charge in that long period and he found it very difficult to give up auctioneering eight or ten years ago when his health made it advisable for him to do so, because he enjoyed the work and so many were insistent that he at least continue until their sales were made.
Engaged as a farmer, implement dealer, cattle buyer and auctioneer, all at one time, Mr. Striffler still found time to give attention to political affairs of the community. He served his township as supervisor, treasurer and highway commissioner and Cass City as village president and trustee.
After a life of unusual activity, Mr. Striffler found it extremely trying to give up his hard work when ill health forced him to "ease up" four years ago.
Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church of which Mr. Striffler was a member on Wednesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.F. Smith. Interment was made in Elkland cemetery.
Besides his widow, he leaves give children, Mrs. O.W. NIQUE of Decker, Mrs. A.A.RICKER and Calvin J. Striffler, both of Cass City, Mrs. Fred SMILEY of Evart, and Mrs. Laura LAWTHER of Flint; one granddaughter, Eleanor NIQUE; one brother, Chas. D. Striffler, and one sister, Mrs. Peter BURG, both of Cass City.
Relatives and friends from a distance in attendance at the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Samuel HELWIG of Lancaster, N.Y., Mrs. Elizabeth BOCKSTEDT of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Frank SIMMET and Harley SIMMET of Middleton, Mich., Miss Bertha SIMMET of Ithaca, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. MANN, Mrs. Elizabeth MANN and daughter, Lucile, Mr. and Mrs. Fred BROWN and Mrs. O. DENT, all of Carson City, Mrs. Caroline HELWIG, Marion HELWIG, Mr. and Mrs. Russell ERB and Chester LOESCHE, all of Bad Axe.

Obituary
WILLIAM MAURICE JOOS,
100, of Independence, MO formerly of Cass City went to be at the right hand of God Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Northcare Hospice House, North Kansas City, MO. He was born July 18, 1911 in Cass City to Frederick William and Hattie (Muck) Joos. He married Eva Mae Sovey February 27, 1937. She died October 11, 1967. He later married Frances Diebel August 26, 1972 in Lapeer. She died June 9, 1995.
Maurice worked on the family farm with his Dad. He also worked for McClellan Creamery, the Nestles Plant in Cass City, Peters Sawmill, REA, Dr. Donahue Farms, and the Ford Garage. He retired from Bauer Candy Company after 27 years as a Salesman. Maurice's passions in life were serving the Lord and his church. He would brag to everyone who visited that he was a member of the Cass City United Methodist Church for 78 years and that he sang in the choir for 73 years. He sang in different men's choruses, quartets and trios and even sang on the radio in Detroit. Another passion of Maurice's was baseball. He loved the Detroit Tigers. He was able to see five games since he came to Independence, MO. This summer when Detroit came to play Kansas City he was able to get out to the ballpark and cheer for his Detroit team. When the Tigers would get the Kansas City Royals out he would clap his hands and have a big grin on his face. This may have been the first time he ever attended a major league game. He was amazed at the condition of the field. Maurice often boasted about his .350 batting average in high school. God had a plan for Maurice to watch his Detroit Tigers have a winning season and when they lost to the Texas Rangers his mission was over. The Lord wanted Maurice to play baseball for him now.
Maurice is survived by his sons: Richard (Connie) Joos of Independence, MO, Donald (JoEllen) Joos of Grand Rapids; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ted Diebel; sisters-in-law: Bob and Mary (Diebel) Dast, Jerry and Florence (Diebel) Decker, Lola Diebel; several nieces and nephews. Sunday Crash Kills Lee "Jack" Corkins
Lee (Jack) Corkins, 48, Belleville, died Tuesday from injuries suffered Sunday when the hood (at right) of this car flew up and the vehicle slammed into three other cars, injuring several persons. Police have been unable to determine who was driving the car because Corkins has his brother, Gene, of Cass City, were both thrown from the car?.
Registered to Corkins Auto Sales in Cass City, the car crossed the centerline about five miles east of Caro Sunday afternoon when its hood flew up. The care tore into the three cars coming from the opposite direction, injuring five persons, three of them seriously.
Listed in critical condition Wednesday at Hills and Dales was Gene Corkins of Cass City, Jack's brother. In fair condition was Mrs. Fern A. Popp, 46, Caro. Dr. Herbert L. Nigg, M.D., Caro, also injured in the crash was listed as "showing improvement," Wednesday morning?
The autopsy was requested because both men were thrown from the car and deputies have not been able to question the survivor?.Popp and Drull both told sherrif's deputies that they saw the Corkins car coming at them at a high rate of speed with the hood up. All three cars hit by the Corkins car attempted to pull to the side of the road but the Corkins auto was too far into the other lane?.Corkins' auto was completely demolished in the front, but ironically, the hood which caused the accident suffered slight damage.
