When he registered for the World War I draft, he was shown as Bailey Monroe McFarland, age 24, resident of Bayou, Sabine, Texas, occupation farming. He was supporting a wife and children. He was described as of medium heighth and slender, with brown eyes and light hair.

He was said to have married twice, first to a Maude Ophelia (b. 1897 c. 1922). By his first wife he had three children: R.C. (b. 1915), Lela May (b. 1917) and Ned (b. 1919). His second wife was Luella, born 13 July 1905 and died 10 June 1981. Both wifes are buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Sabine County, Texas.
