In an article by Harry Noble about "Honky-Tonks" in the November 7, 2002 edition of the SAN AUGUSTINE TRIBUNE, the following story appeared about the Suzy-Q, on Highway 8, halfway between Ford's Corner and Rosevine. It was operated by Lloyd Jones and his brother Bluford. "On a hot Saturday night, July 15, 1939, the jukebox was blaring, boots were scooting across the dance floor and beer caps were being popped with regularity. Rubus Price JOHNSON, thirty-one years of age and the son of E. Rufus (Bud) JOHNSON and Sally (Sumiter) JOHNSON, came in looking for his wife. He found her in a booth with Lott CONN. An argument developed and CONN, armed with a pistol, fired. JOHNSON fell, mortally wounded. During the trial for first degree murder, John WILLIAMS, who lived less than a half mile from the CONN family was called to testify. Odd as it might seem, being called as a witness for the State provided WILLIAMS an opportunity to obtain a measure of retribution. A little more than fifteen years earlier, on a Monday night in 1923, Lott C. CONN had committed aggravated assault against WILLIAMS, striking and bruising him with a hammer causing "....serious bodily injury." Evidently, Williams didn't take advantage of the situatioin, for while under cross examination he was asked what he saw, and replied that he didn't see anything. He was reminded he was in full view of the shooting, and asked again how he couhd have seen nothing. In a stentorian voice WILLIAMS replied, "I didn't see nothin' because I was drinking beer and eatin' tator slips." The courtroom buzzed with laughter. The Suzy-Q is gone now, not even a trace of foundation is left."

Mrs. Letha Conn Laird celebrated her 79th birthday Sunday, January 19, 1969, at her home in the Gravelhill community with an open house from 2 till 6 p.m.

Mrs. Letha Laird, the daughter of Henry (Jiggs) Conn and Fannie Barrett Conn, was born near her present home and has spent her entire life in or near the Gravelhill community.

Hosts for the occastion were her three children, W. E. (Pete) Laird, Mrs. A. L. (Marjie) Weeks and A. E. Laird. Seven grandchildren, Fletcher, Carolyn Weeks Barnes and Mike Weeks; Lyn, Shawn, Tannia and Venetia Laird; and April Weeks her great grandchild.....Approximately 65 friends and relatives called.

Vera Ford

Vera Ford, 97, of San Augustine County died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 in San Augustine. She was born August 7, 1909 in San Augustine as a daughter of the late Lott C. CONN and Rosa CONN. She owned Ford General Store and was a member of the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. Survivors: son, Jerry Glen FORD and wife Romana of San Augustine, grandchildren, Taylor FORD and wife Jenni of Eastland, Trent FORD of Temple, Suzanne SKINNER and husband Steve of Johnson City and Vera NAMES of San Diego, Calif., great-grandchildren, Taylor COLLIER of Dallas, Story COLLIER of Dallas, Emily FANNIN of Johnson City, Stewart FANNIN of Johnson City, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lott and Rosa CONN, husband Elbert FORD, daughters, Flora Dean NAMES and infant Carol Faye FORD; sisters, Jewel HALTON, Vernie WILLIS, and Lottie JENKINS. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Buddy Pratt and Bro. C.R. Sharpton officiating. Interment will follow at Tebo Cemetery in Sabine County. Services are under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

James Henry Conn, 79, died Monday morning in his home in Bronson, Texas. Jimmy was born in Bronson to Charlie Matthew and Madgie Ellie Palmer Conn. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until 1959, later he became a pipeliner and was a member of Pipeliner's Union 798. Jimmy was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Bronson, Texas.

He is survived by his wife Mozelle Conn of Bronson, his son Billy Conn and his wife Susan of Bronson, his daughter Belinda Reynolds of Bronson, three grandchildren; Chris, Kelli, and Jesse, and his sister Fannie Clem of Beaumont, Texas.

Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 9:00PM, Tuesday, July 9, 2013, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10:00AM, Wednesday, July 10, 2013, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Gravelhill Cemetery near Hemphill, Texas.

Kay Parker McCary's transcription of the Gravel Hill Cemetery shows that she was first married to Lee Roy McCroskey and second to Col. Piram. In his autobiography, Robert Cecil McDaniel writes that while they were stationed in San Antonio, his sister-in-law, Evilee "lived with us for a year so so, and during that time, she worked for Frost National Bank. After we left San Antonio, she worked at Fort Sam Houston as a Federal Civil Service employee. Later, and when in her early fifties, she married a Colonel Piram, a widower, who was then stationed at Fourth Army Headquarters. They were later transferred to Fort Bliss, where he retired. During the late sixties, Colonel Piram died of a heart attack while on a fishing trip int he Rocky Mountains."

Loye McDANIEL

Loye McDANIEL, 83, of Hemphill died at 11:52 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine. Mrs. McDANIEL was born Oct. 30, 1919. Survivors: husband, Cecil McDANIEL of Hemphill; two sons, Dwight McDANIEL of Houston and Stephen McDANIEL of Longview: a brother, Tommy WHITE of Gravel Hill community, Sabine county and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2005 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill follwed at Oakhill Cemetery in Sabine County.

White was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and a member of Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge. Survivors; wife, Kathleen White of Gravelhill; sons, Mike White of Kileen, Drew White and wife Vickie of Gravelhill, and Kevin White of Gravehill; and grandchildren, Marty White, Amanda SMITH and husband Sgt. John SMITH, Matthew White, Dustin White, J.T. White, Christine White and Alexx White. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Gravelhill, with Bro. I.W. Ferguson and Bro. Randy Mills officiating. Interment followed at Gravelhill Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Nobie Lee Chambers

Nobie Lee Chambers, 74, of the Gravelhill community died early Saturday, May 2, 1998, at her residence following an illness.

Mrs. Chambers was born April 14, 1924 in Sabine County and was a longtime area resident and a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and member of the Jasper Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #291.

Survivors: her husband, Leon Chamber of Gravelhill; a daughter and son-in-law, Althea and Roy Glen Odom of Gravelhill; two grandsons, Brian Odom of Milam and Glen Odom of Alto; and three great-grandsons.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Gravelhill, with Bro. I. W. Ferguson officiating. Interment followed a Gravelhill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

A funeral service for Mrs. Lerene Halbert Green, 90, of Lufkin, Texas, formerly of Nacogdoches was held on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at 2:00 pm at Laird Funeral Home with Rev. Dock Lazarine officiating. Burial was at Black Jack Cemetery.

Mrs. Green was born on November 5, 1920, in Bronson, Texas to the late Willie Chester and Frances Myrtle Conn Halbert. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in Lufkin, Texas. Lerene is survived by three sons, Dale Green and wife, Michelle of Lufkin; Keith Green and wife, Donna of Lufkin and Gary Green and wife, Sharon of Forney, Texas; a daughter, Sharon Green, of Houston; she is also survived by nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. John T. Halbert and wife, Wilma Dell of Beaumont; a sister-in-law, Norma Halbert Hargis of Nacogdoches and lifelong friend, Virginia Langford of Euless, Texas as well as a host of other extended family and good friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Lamar Green and a brother, Loron Chester Halbert. Pallbearers were Ken Green, Ken Langford, Clark Green, Steve Green, Dr. Dean Halbert and Scott Green. Dwight Patrick McDaniel

Dwight Patrick McDaniel died on the 9th day of February, 2006 at the age of 55 in Houston, Texas. Dwight was born on June 10, 1950 at Brooke Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. As a son of an army officer, Dwight lived on different army bases throughout his childhood including Quarry Heights in the Panama Canal Zone and Fort Myer in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Lutcher Stark High School in Orange, Texas in 1968, Dwight attended Baylor University from 1968-69 and The University of Hawaii from 1969-70 before traveling extensively in the South Sea Islands. As part of his oceanography studies at the University of Hawaii, Dwight worked on a research ship in his Spring semester that journeyed from Hawaii to New Guinea. At the end of this voyage, Dwight remained in New Guinea and spent over three years living and working in Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the Fiji Islands. It was during this time that he developed a love for mountain climbing and hiking, and worked briefly as an instructor and guide. In 1971, Dwight returned to the United States, worked for Temple Industries, Pineland, and then attended The University of Texas at Austin. Dwight's love for the outdoors and mountaineering took him to Banff, Alberta, Canada in the Spring of 1976 where he met his future wife, Patricia Ann Tweten of Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada. Dwight and Pat were married two years later on June 29, 1978 in Missoula, Montana where Dwight was attending The University of Montana. Dwight graduated from The University of Montana with a journalism degree in 1979. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for a newspaper in Lufkin, and later, for a bank in Cushing, Texas. In 1985, Dwight earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston. Dwight practiced law in Longview, Texas with his brother, Stephen White McDaniel, from 1985-90. In 1990, Dwight moved to Hemphill, Texas where he established a private law practice, served as Sabine County Attorney for a number of years, and with his brother, built a computerized title company, Toledo Bend Title. In addition to mountaineering and hiking, Dwight was interested in history and read extensively on the American Civil War. He also authored numerous short stories and a novel, and maintained a diary to his son, Harper Longstreet McDaniel, from Harper's birth until he was eight years old. Dwight Patrick McDaniel is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Tweten McDaniel; his son, Harper Longstreet McDaniel; brother, Stephen White McDaniel; sister-in-law, Marcia Sue Burlison McDaniel; and niece, Erin Colleen McDaniel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Cecil McDaniel and Loye Winona White McDaniel; and his nephew Stephen White McDaniel, II. He will be remembered as an adventurer, scholar, and mountaineer. Dwight was by birth and nature a kind and generous husband, father, son, brother and uncle who will be truly missed by his family and all who knew him. Visitation will be from 4:00-9:00pm Sunday evening, February 12, 2006, at Starr Funeral Home, Hemphill, Texas. The funeral service will be at 1:00pm Monday, February 13, 2006, at First Baptist Church Hemphill, Texas, with the burial following in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home. Helicopter Crash claims native, Page 1

John Larry Conn, 51, formerly of Hemphill was identified as one of the four contract workers who lost their life in a helicopter crash Dec. 11. The crew had left Sabine Pass and was enroute to an offshore oil platform 18-miles off of the Texas coast Thursday morning. Early reportes by John Griggs, senior vice president of Rotorcraft Leasing Co, LLC stated that the early winter storm was not a factor in the helicopter crash. Snowfall and sleet, combined with 10 to 20 mph north winds were not a challenge to the pilot...New Orleans Coast Guard got the call at 9:47 a.m., almost two hours after the aircraft should have arrived at the platform.....Conn, along with four others, were killed in the crash.

John Larry Conn

John Larry Conn, 51, died Dec. 11, 2008. he was born on Oct. 17, 1957 in San Augustine County. he was a resident of Katy since 1999 moving from Hemphill. Conn was a lead operator employed by Island Operating Company.

Conn is survived by his wife, Nina of Hemphill; two sons Charlie Conn of Spring and Kyle Conn of of Hemphill; two daughters, Shoney Conn and Ashley Conn, both of Katy; three brothers, Jesse Conn of Hemphill; Huey Conn of Lufkin; and Steven Conn of Hemphill; sister, Cynthia Bibey of Plattsmouth, NE; and two grandchildren, Kiley and Jacob Conn.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 14 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home, Hemphill.
